Nw Year BuqiMt
Th Ideal Cafe wan a Meat of mer-
riment and good cheer on last Mon-
day evening whenMecan Ralph Ed-
wardi and Ray Williams had a num-
ber of Eufaula's young men as their
guests at a Leap Year Banquet
Inasmuch as there is a general
shifting of tho Initiative and a turn-
ing of tables in things social during
a leap year “Mother Rudolph” the
genial proprieties of the Ideal Cate
conceived tbs idea of having the
young men enter by way of the back
Instead of the front door This Inno-
vation seemed not to discommode
the young men in great measure for
9 o'clock found all those invited me-
noeuvering around a large punch
bowl which occupied the strategic
position in the sitting room at the
rear of the dining hall The propri-
etors of the Cf fe were vigilant that
there was no ebb in the contents of
the said bowl and several story tell-
ers of more than local celebrity would
not permit the laugh tot to die down
Mr Tommany was Induced to treat
the crowd to several gems of native
humor never before heard this side
the Irish seas
The guests were then ushered into
the dining room and took their places
around a long table which was boun-
tifully laden with the fat of the land
The seats were scarcely filled and
the vanguard of a regular Delmonico
seven course banquet appeared when
C M Becket became enamored of
the egg-nog and for a time ail but
monopolised the serving force In re-
plenishing his supply of the “milk”
He finally sought an interview with
“Mother Rudolph" and offered her
a handsome price for her cow Then
a quiet as pronounced as that at a
deaf and dumb quilting party per-
vaded the place whilst each guest
vied with bis neighbor in relieving
the table of its burden
Towards the close of the festivities
Judge Walter T Fears the toastmas-
ter delivered a moat appropriate ad-
dress which was marked with out-
bursts of his original humor and
never-waning youthful spirit Va-
rious ones were called upon and res
pouded to toasts Jack Holtwick
the photographer appeared and took
several flashlight pictures of the ban-
quet scene
An election yai held for the pur-
pose of determining the most popu-
lar young bachelor In town The re-
sult was the almost unanimous elec-
tion of Jay Smith who was then pre-
sented by the toastmaster with a
lieautlful young lady doll Jay’s
speech of acceptance was a gem of
oratorical effort
After some songs in which all lus
tily joined and more story telling
and the merriment was at its height
and midnight was nigh there Was
an announced Invasion by a score of
Eufaula’s most popular young ladles
headed by Mrs Louis Brown who
poured In through the rear door A
general stampede of the bachelors
was scarcely averted When Judge
Fears bad sufficiently rallied his
forces to gain an audience he de-
clared the Invaders the victors and
Mrs Brown as toastmlstress for the
fair beselgcrs magnanimously read
the following poem composed for the
occasion:
New Year is here and
Every One is
Wishing Good Cheer
You Gents thought no doubt that an
Evening well spent
After Eleven meant
Remain at home for ladies ( we leave
you out)
8uppoae however that we thought
'Twould not be wise
After this Stag Call for
Gentlemen friends to be out alone for
fear they might fall
Please do not think us rude or intru-
sive After all the laugh is on you
Remember this night all things are
escuslve:
'Tis Leap Year you know well and
true
You still are ourfriends aren't youf
Let's all drink to the New Year
After a renewal of the festivities
in which the bachelors were the
hosts and the morning began to grow
an important custom of the new year
was introduced each one of the girls
requesting some one of the “stags”
to escort them home
The time will be long remembered
as one of the most pleasant and sue
cessful social events Kufuula lias
ever enjoyed
