It is funny hut if you rub some people’s hair

The home newspaper is supposed to protect
the interest of its oonstiteunts This the Dem-
ocrat is going to do regardless of the enemies it
may among outsiders and the corporations
and their hirelings All the people ask for is
square deal and if they don’t get that we are
always willing and ready to help then
If you are not willing to pay your share to-
wards pushing the town and helping to develop
your own interests the interests of your chil-
dren and neighbors sell out anc go to Mexico and
enter a homestead You belong on the border
line of civilisation Every other little town in
this section of the county has sejf interest enough
to place its name on the map and begin to take on
metropolitian airs Olustee must push itself for-
ward or the trend of events will push it back-
' "
The filthy which -accumulates on the business
streetolj thistown from the hitching of teams
along in front of the business houses where they
ar£ left standing fo hours at a time is to be de-
lIO£ejd Delivery wagons should be kept in the
t ear and hitch racks should be erected behind
each place of business sq that farmers and oth-
ers could have a place to hitch their teams with-
out making a livery stable out of the street
This matter should be attended to at once by
the city council
W-at this town needs is the enforcement of
some of the city ordinances Especially is this
true of tip dog ordinance People who keep a
number tyese mangy curs sbjould be made
pay tax on tjiem and should bd compelled to kbep
the more ferocious of them tied up at home It
js past understanding why any one will want to
have three or four low bred dogs always follow-
ing them around on the streets and the only wav
to reduce the number or get rid of them alto-
gether is to force the payment of a good sized
tax
“There never has been a time in thq history of
of Olustee when the bqslnesa men of the town
were in such close tqqcfy vyith each other as they
are today’’ remarked a visitor to the Young
Men’s Business Clql Monday night Tpai this
is true is evidenced every day by the general
good feeling prevailing and the desire of each
and everyone of our citizens to put their shoulder
to the wheel and push for OJustee There is no
reason why Olustee shoald not rapidly forge to
the front within the next year Let ns aet our
aim to increase our population to twenty five
'hundred by thia time next year and by working
and pulling together we can oertainly do this
Onward and upward should be our motto
lights water parks tip
Being a member of cgff fjjy Qpaaerclal here
I roto with Int front fty ftyrtr subjects and
thoy should b'tim after carefully with tltought
firtlm futon welfare of the town which wo
have learnod hero from experience Ail
telegraph and telephone pojea should be kept
off the streets as they ' are a menace in time
of fire as well as being very nnsightly Electric
lights are almost a necessity in every town now-
adays as Is also water works but the water end
of it dont pay very well in a small place as
there is a certain amount of expense that must
be met and in the smaller towns a great many
have their own wells and cisterns for water
hence do npt patronize the city water works but
they are necessary in case of fire and if water
works and light plants are built they should be
done yery honestly and economically and kept
within reason as to cost of erecting
You have one of the most beautiful places for
a park I haye even seen I refer to the place
just aoross Turkey Creek where the crescent
shaped lake is This could be made a lovely
place The oity should secure an option on It at
once before the price gets too high
Yours truly

SELLING OFTHE SCHOOL LANDS
One of the most vital questions confronting the
people of Oklahoma to day is that of the sale of
a J ’ i
the school lands in this state Every man ind
woman in Oklahoma should make it a point to
study up on this master between now and the
day of eleotion when this all important question
must be settled once for all The following
from the Milford 111 Jerald yvlU give you some
ight on this matter: 17‘
“Iliicois reoeived one section in every town
ship from the general government for school
purposes amounting to 1006729 acres All of
this has been sold except 7257 acres 999463
acres were sold and the amount now on hand
realized from this is $7729387 The average
price per acre is $775 If this land had been
kept until now its rental would have brought: a
greater revenue than the interest on the proceeds
las produced and it could now be sold for an
average price of $100 per acre or for $99946300
The income on this at four per cent would be $3-
997852 -a 11
The' school lands unsold are yalued at $11159-
826 or $1537 per acre Most of the unsold land
is in Chicago and the estimated valuation may at
first thought seem to have been placed too high
Had none of the school lands been sold the
schools might now have an income of $4580710 or
4 for every child enrolled The' income for
each child enrolled now is only ninety cents
The new state of of Oklahoma is about to de-
cide the question whether its 'sohool lands shall
be sold or whether they should be kept and leased
Oklahoma received two sections of land in every
township It is a safe prediction that if she keeps
her school lands for twenty years she will receive
vearly more income from the land aud at the end
of twenty years most of her schools will be sup-
ported without a cent of taxation
CflWe haye just received a new lot of
dress goods of the latest weaves and shades
Come in and see them whether you are
ready to buy or not No trouble to show
goods Remember the place

New Land
Olustee has a few people left yet who are too
nfernallazy to get out and hustle for the al
mighty dollar for themselves but who wants the
other fellow to do the rustling that they may butt
in and reap a part of the harvest We are happy
to state that there are but few of this brand of
citizeny left and we hope to be able to chronicle
erelong that even these few have sought new
grazing ground The “moocher” and the knock-
er will soon find themselves without a home in
this town Olustee doesn’t want them and wont
tolerate them If you cant boost move along

Several months ago we began agitating the ne-
cessity of a fine new school building to cost some
where in the neighborhood of $25000 Some
of onr people threw up their hands and told ns
snch talk was rank nonsense Bnt we knew bet-
ter and with a few “live ones” we kept talking
school building A bond election was held and
bonds amounting to $22000 were voted UNANI-
MOUSLY and today the contract is to be let for
the immediate erection of what will proveto be
the finest school building in JaClcsan county
Another proof that the way to accomplish things
late get a hold and keep a hangin
