SERMON TO MOTHERS
(Texarkanian)
In every town there are girls
whose sole ambition seemingly
ia to annex as many admirers as
possible and the tricks to which
they resort while successful fre-
quently only cheapen the girls
in the eyes of men worth while
and sometimes lead to complica-
tions '
Texarkana is no exception In
this citv of churches may be
seen almost any evening num-
bers of young girls parading the
streets at hours untimely and
conducting themselves in a man-
ner to invite attention Many of
these girls are not really bad
They are just frivolous and
thoughtless of the consequences
that might follow their acts
Men are mean enough but
they should not be blamed for
accosting a girl or young woman
whose entire demeanor consti-
tutes an invitation
The - Pine Bluff Graphic re-
counts an incident that occurred
recently:
"A 15-year-old girl in a near-
by town who is in the habit of
meeting trains and flirting with
the men succeeded in landing a
beau the other day She gaily
consented when he asked to walk
home with her this was real ro-
mantic but the end was more
romantic Her newly-formed
acquaintance boldly' rang the
doorbell Her mother came to j themselves
the door and Mr Traveling Man
delivered a short lecture some-
thing like this: -
“ ‘Madam here is your little
girl I picked ?her up at the de-
pot a place where girls of her
age should not go alone unless
on business I have a daughter
at home about the age of this
one I am away from home a
good deal and don’t know wheth-
er my daughter meet3 the trains
and flirts with the trainmen and
passengers or not but if she
does I hope some one will do
that which I have done for you
— take her home to her mother ’ ’ ’
There is a wholesome sermon
in this for mothers too few of
whom in these days keep fully
informed of their daughters’
whereabouts and companions
“0 Where is my Wandering
Boy Tonight?” may be properly
paraphrased by many mothers
to ”0 Where Is My Girl Wan-
dering Tonight?”
MEN OF DEAD AMBITITION
Men with red blood in their veins
have as little regard for the lazy
or ambitionless man as nature
has for a vacuum The average
man with reasonable good health
and a modicum of worldy ex-
perience who gets out of a job is
entitled to little sympathy
Yet there are some of that kind
of men in Oklahoma City and in
every other city and town in the
country
Who has not heard them say:
I can’t get work and there is
not a thing I can do to maintain
myself and family”
This kind of talk too when
there are frail women who not
able to find employment perhaps
have set about to create a means
of livelihood renting a house to
keep roomers engaging in some
mall business doing some special
line of work There are dozens
of this kind of enterprising wo-
men in Oklahoma City and they
can be found in every community
Their invariable success is a re-
take to the man who “can’t find
Anything to do

cza out of a job who manifest

Too many men thrown out of
enployment lounge around
awaiting for someone to call upon
them and tender them the pres-
idency of a bank or a railroad
If they have ever worked for
$200 a month or $100 or $50
they feel that they can’t accept
employment where the pay is
less than that It would hurt
their pride but in allowing their
friends to “help them out” their
pride seemingly has a hide like
that of a rhinoceros
And some of this variety of
men in applying for a job hang
their heads like a dog that has
been canght in the act of robbing
a hen’s nest Defeat is written
on their countenance and their
whole bearing gives the impres-
sion of lost hope We have often
wondered why live business men
when approached by fellows of
this class do not recommend
them to solicit employment at an

bearers They look the part

we ail want long terms and big sala-!

office and long terms generally and I
this reminds me as Mr Lincoln would j
say of a little anecdote A young
lady a preacher and a teacher
were once discussing the question
as to the moon’s being inhabited
The young lady who was in love
looked through the telescope and said
"Yes the moon is inhabited for I see
two loveri" The minister who was
interested in churches looked next and
exclaimed "It is certainly in habited
for I see a church steeple’' The
teacher’s turn to look through the tele-
scope came last and he confirmed the
discovery of the preacher and young
lady by saying "The moon is surely in-
habited fori see a fine college’’ So it
depends a good deal on our self-interest
and our view point as how we look at
thingsWhen the taxpayer looks through
the telescope he declares that the moon
is not inhabited that they neither eat
nor drink up there for he knowt if they
did he would like Jones have to pay

act forever busted up his golf en egg
business Is there not some danger
that we may kill the goose that is laying
the golden egg by extravagant taxation?

Chapter xvi
Since the last legislature limited the
school tax levy to 5 mills I hava re-
ceived numerous inquiries as to length
of school term The Oklahoma school
law says: “That in all school districts
in this state in which there ia a good
and sufficient school building a school
shall bejnaintained for a period of not
less than three months between the
first day of October and the first day
of June in each year" Tha last legit-
lature passed a resolution submitting
the following amendment to the con-
stitution to be ratified or rejected by
tha people at the general election in
1912: "The legislature shall have pow-
er to levy taxes in aid of the common
schools of the state and to provide for
the apportionment and distribution
thereof Whenever the amount realised
from a 5 mill ad valorem levy and all
other sources shall be insufficient to
maintain the common schools in any
district five months in any year the re-
maining sum necessary to so maintain
such school shall be apportioned and
paid out of such state levy" It is ob-
vious from the above quotation that
the law makers did not contemplate or
think the people able to sustain a
lengthy term of public' school in the
early and formative period of the state's
history Indeed no new state was ever j
able to do so Texas with the richest
and most magnificent public school fund
of any state in the Union with millions'
of hot public domain reserved for a I
permanent school fund and after a 1
public school history of nearly forty j
years can not now maintain an aver-
age school term of more than six j
months When Oklahoma was ad-1
mi t ted into the Union there were many
enthusiastic Utopian dreamers who im-
agined that with statehood would come
money growing on the trees for school
and other purposes and all they had to
do was to put forth a little energy and
reach up for it and their sacks would
be filled and the mule loaded But the
three successive tax gatherings that
have come and gone have had a ten-
dency to dispel this illusion and the
dreams of free money have received a
rude jar that has set the people to
thinking The people are beginning to
find out
“ 1 hit In these busy wukiu' d eye deys

An’ you needo'l look to mlrakula to furnish

Now when you are wanting loaves of bread

The constitution limits the total taxes
on an ad valorem basis to 31 1-2 mills
on the dollar and our own town and
many others have already exceeded
this amount that is to say are paying
more than three dollars and thirty-one
and a half cents on the hundred which
is considered a good rate of interest in
many sections of the United States
