How to Stand Heat
By DR D O HAM:MONDS
State Health Commissioner
'
With proper care the human body
can stand great extre:aes of beat and
cold - So perfect is the beat regulat-
ing apparatus that the normal body
temperature is not altered by u-
posure to the frigid weather of the
north pole nor Is it affected by life
in the torrid zones of Africa With-
in certain limits extremes of heat and
cold do little or no herr Great cold
and intense beat may cause serious
trouble however and the laborer in
steel who exposes his naked sweating
body to chill sir of winter after his
turn at the furnace finds' that too
frequent and sudden changes lead to
physical trouble just as the indoor
worker who exposes himself to the
rays of the sun on the bathing beach
ions a victim to sunburn or maybe
- beat stroke or sun stroke
Individuals who desire to keep well
in summer and winter must so alter
the conditions under which they live
as to provide for as uniform a temper-
ature as possible A certain amount of
hardening is desirable however for
normal individual so that the coddling
prozem must not be carried too far
Moderation in hardening processes
must be piacticed House or office
should be kept comfortably warm in
winter and cool in summer Clothing
may be suited to the temperature
The infant death rate is high in
hummer particularly from (limb's
and enteritis Breast feeding is the
best preventative but the baby must
be kept tool Too many babies are
wrapt up in so many clothes that it
is a wonder they do tiot smother
Keep the baby
' Clothing for summer should be t(ial
and airy Light colored material is
the best Dark or black clothing Will
retain more heat than light colored
material of the same weight
Avoid heating foods fou:h
Cut down on the amount of sugar and
pastry Decrease the ration of pots
toes Cool baths and plenty of good
cool drinking water will help Modera-
tion in all things is the goldearule
for the hot season - -
Heat strokes occur from undue
exposures to the sun's rays in a humid
atmosphere It is most common in
alcoholics and in those who are ex
bausted from physical lahor disaipa
tion lack of sleep or other similar
causes

"Inspiration is nine tiutths per-

Many speakers wondered whether
those long-drawn-out demonstrations
were outbursts of enthusiasm or just
part of the secret plot to keep them
from continuing too soon!
