flew Boating Laws
Of State Explained
In Weekly Article
Oklahoma boat and motor
owners and others interested in
the new boating law which was
passed last spring by the state
legislature and went into effect
October 8 may have a number
of questions concerning costs
rules and regulations included
in the bill
Many of these are included in
the following information issued
by the state planning board
which now administers the law
Q Who needs a license?
A The owner of any vessel
(meaning every kind of boat)
used in the waters of the state
is required to have a certificate
of number for his boat and a
certificate of title for his motor
These certificates—or licenses—
are issued by the State of Okla-
homa through the planning and
resources board
Q How can I obtain a license?
A By going to a licensed boat
dealer in your area and picking
up an application blank issued
by the state to licensed boat
dealers Fill in the blank and
send it with either a postal
money order or a certified check
to cover cost of license fee (s)
to the Planning and Resources
Board 533 State Capitol Okla-
homa City Oklahoma
No cash will be accepted in
payment of license fees A money
order or a certified check gives
you a reeeipt of payment
Q What if there is no
licensed boat dealer in my area?
A Dealers are in all parts of
the state However if it is im-
possible for you to get an appli-
cation blank from a licensed
dealer you may write for your
application to t h e planning
board at the state capitol Get-
ting the blank from a licensed
dealer in your area speeds up
the processing of licensing and
is much more convenient
Q How much will my license
cost? -
A License fees for boats are
divided in classes based on
length of boat License fees for
motors I are divided in classes
based on -the horsepower of the
motor The scale Is:
1 Boat license title and num-
ber fees:
Class A-
16 feet or less without
motor 150
Class B—
Over 16 feet and less than
26 feet without motor 250
Class C—

length 700
Class D— I I

The city of Akron Ohio has been a transportation manufacturing and
distribution center for more than 150 years Its transportation his
tory even antedates its founding Before white men entered what
became Northeastern Ohio the Portage Path was a famous Indian
highway Red men portaged their canoes from the Cuyahoga River
In the Lake Erie watershed over the divide between the Tusca
rawas River1 in the Ohio River watershed At one time the Portage
Path was-the western boundary of the United States Today it la a
beautiful residential street
Transportation and industry
have built Akron from a sprawl-
ing village of 250 people to a city
of nearly 300000 the center of
a metropolitan area of nearly
half a million From village water-powered
plants came flour
and corn meal wool cloth and
whiskey Later Akron turned to
production of farm machinery
and cereal The first American
oatmeal was made in Akron The
third manufacturing period came
with the development of huge
clay deposits and the production
of pottery sewer pipe and brick
And then came rubber In 1870
Dr Benjamin Franklin Goodrich
started the company that bears
his name first producing fire
hose and similar goods then car-
riage tires and bicycle tires
Four of the five major rubber

Q What is the importance of
a boat license? How is the num-
ber used?
A The law requiras that every
vessel (meaning every kind of
boat) on the waters of this state
shall be numbered The number
of your boat will be given you
with your boat certificate nf
number (or license) This num-
ber must be displayed on each
side of the bow of your boat in
clearly visible block letters at
least three (3) inches high
A color in contrast to the color
of your boat is required for the
numbers so that they might be
easily seen The number must
be maintained in such a way
that it is clearly readable It can
be painted on or attached num-
bers may be used
The license for both boat and
motor must be available at all
times for inspection so keeping
it in the boat whether in opera
tion or not is necessary
The licenses are of a size that
will fold and fit easily into a
billfold purse or pocket
Q What is a boat license
like? What do the numbers
mean?
A In accordance with Coast
Guard regulations an Oklahoma
boat license will look like this:
The first two letters identify
the state The second four are
numbers issued licensees as their
permanent number For example
if you were the second person
in the state to get a license your
identifying number would be
0002 if you were the 2000 —
2000 - etc
The last two letters also have
significance The first of this
group identifies the class of boat
to which it is given The last
indicates the series of numbers
For example the first 9999 boats
will be in series A
So if you have a class A boat
and are number 2000 among
those receiving licenses in the
first series of licenses your
cense would look something like
this 0K-2000-AA This number
would be on the bow of your
Q How long is my license
-
valid?
A License fees must be paid
from year to year Just as you
keep the same drivers license
number by paying for renewal
you keep your boat license by
yearly renewal The renewal fee
is the same as the first fee for
both boats and motors
Payment of license fees covers
a period of April 1 of a calendar 1
year until March 30 of the fol
lowing year In other words the
deadline for renewing your
cense will be April 1 of each
year At this time however the
original license fees will be in
effect until March 31 1961
