DvLR BRO Lovm: The liethodist
Church in Ignite has a live Home MIS
Mon Society which is accomplishing
good and promisee to be more efficient
We SIM have a flourishing Foreign Mis
sten Society' The H M work is impor-
tant but it is my candid opinion if the
church !sever put on a seiteustalning
babis In this conference more attention
must be ghen to Foreign Mellow My
experience is that the more thoroughly
enlisted a church is in foreign work the
more thoroughly it looks after home
interests - -
k One fact that surprises me Is that so
many persons who profesp to he follow
era of Christ are opposed to Foreign
Missions I cannot understand upon
what ground they base their oppasition
r Oar Lord commissioned his church to go
Into ail the world and preach the gospel
to every creature This command has
never been revoked but Is obligatory
i upon us as upon the first disciples Ass
rule those who are opposed to Foreign
Missions do least at home
Some people opi)ose Foreign Missions
from down right stinginess A really
stingy man cannot be a gentleman much
less a Christian The good Lord deliver
us from a parsimonious spirit '
It Is surprising how some people love
money I heard of a man the other day
who professes to be a christian and de
)
lights to tell of his 'intimacy with the
Lord and the good deeds he perftrme
who exhibited more love for money than
Is consistent with hie professions A
young gentleman of his acquaintance
I who desired to enter the university to
take a special course in law applied to
him for a loan of a few hundred dollars
le complied with the request granted
the loan and assured the young man he
could have his own time to return the
money and that he would charge him no
interest Soon after the young man re
turned to the community where his sup
posed tenefactor redded he began to
crowd him to pay the loan Finally
-When the young man did get ready to
)ettiturn the money this saintly person
wanted to charge him 12 per cent Inter-

' Paul did not plant the church at Rome
Just who did la hard to conclude It
oes not make vety much difference
A tir the day of Pentecost it was not
long before Jesus had witnesses at Home
Patti was ready to build upon another
man's foundation The church at Rome
was in a flourishing condition—it was
bearing fruit unto God Thtir faith was
spoken throughout the whole world
This fact however did not do away
with the necessity of a deeper work pf
grace Spiritual gifts such as St Paul
was capable of imparting would send
the roots or their faith down by the
"rivers of water" the sustaining power I
of which would shortly keep them in 7'a
fruitful condition when the sun of perii
cotton was scorching every tree which
was not planted by God Matthew 1821
Every spiritual gift serves to root and
ground one in the love of God Disci
pies of Jesus are not to stop with they
compteitend with all saines what is the
breadth and length and heighth of riches
of God in Christ Jesus—Eph 8:17-19
They are to be content to Pee men ak
trees walking but should see clearly the
Son of God whose blood cleanseth from
it en—I John I:4-7 No follower of
Jesus is ready to go with him to the
(lentil or go to him without the camp
bearing his reproach whoze heart is not
Axed on him by the power of the Holy
Ghost Ptter is a striking example of
this Unstable as water before Pente-
cost—like a rook alter the fullness of
Peatecoat
2 James has something to say about a
double-minded man—a divided heart
man—a wavering man Such are such
because they lack wisdom which God
would give liberally of if He is asked in
faith by those who lack
Some Object to a couplet of verses
found in "Conte Thou Fount of Every
Blessing" which reads like this: -
"Pione to whnder Lord I feel It
Prone to leave the God 1 love"
111t why this Objection when In the
next two verses are these words:
"Here's my heart 0 t Ike and kW ltl
Heal It for thy courts above"
-1 here are secret misgivings and doubts
In the heart of nearly every flWconverr
Their sins whicn have been forgiven do
not troulle them more but in very many
no doubt there Is not the established
heart which brings assurance and quiet
flees There is not deep and calm sea
Like experience which they hunger and
thirst for There are so very many of
all ages who are not kept by the power
of thorough faith to a steady and due
performance of christian work Tom
love wanes they are not "diligent In
businesslervent in spirit serving the
Lord" The Master cannot trust them
through evil as well as good report when
Iniquity abounds lie Is distrustful of
their love If he should lean upon them
he Is afraid they 'timid brtak as does the
reed and pierce the hand chick was
pierced for them The chuicit cannot
count on them They are to the front
to-day tomorrow they may be so far
behind as to be taken up by the enemy
Evidently the hearts of quite a number
of God's people need to grow in grace
and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ to the end that they-may become
pillars in the church and not reeds which
are shaken by every passing breeze
Every child of grace in due time
should arrive at the full stature ot a
man in Christ Jesus He should flourish
as the palm tree an' be rooted so deep
In divine things as to grow like the ce-
dar in Lebanon -
"How firm a foundation ye saints of the
Lord
la laid tor your faith In his excellent
word"

Christ Before the High Priest John
xvill 1547 Golden !Text "Be Came
Unto His Own and His Own Received
Hint N: t" John I 11
First—The court was composed of Me
chief priests scribes and elders (1) The
high priest well the Judge He was set
apart by a special anointing and dress-
ed different to the common priesthood
It was hid duty to go alone once each
year Mit) the holy of holies to make the
necessary offering for himself and for
the people Cinist is our High Priest
(2) David divided the priesthood into
twentyfour courses This order likely
continue I (town to the coining of Christ
The principal of each coursewas called a
Chief priest (3) The scribes were the
transcribers of the Scriptures During
the captivity of the Hebrew latigu3ge
became almost extinct But few of the
Jews could read their sacred writings
Those who translated them into Chaldee-
Ic language were called scribes (4) The
word elder means an elderly person It
was originally given to the 'beads of
families We know not when it became
an official title They were recognized
very early as a distinct body They
were likely the leaders of each tribe
1 The word suggests age wisdotu and
piety
Second—The prisoner and His friends
Jesus was iu toe palace of the high
priest 'John was known to Caiphas
and went in with Jesus PeterS was un-
knon n to him and was not admitted
Titrough the influence of John " he was
allowed to enter It was &ring tnie- trial that Peter denied the Siviour- Ile
first denied then denied With an ea Ii
and finally with cursing and swearing
saying he "knew not the man" How
are the mighty fa'lletif Tne following
are the ch14 facts that led to Pelt?'
apostasy: (I) Satan desired to have him
that he might sift him as wheat (2) He
was over confident and felt that he wee
ready toll down his life for Jesus (3)
He followed afar oft John kept near by
and remained firm (4) He fell Into bad
company He did not remain down
bet soon arose and became the chief
apostle of the Jews
Third—The - witnesses ThN court
wished to dispose of Jesus according to -
law They sought for witnesses not to
testify t9 the truth but to swear against
Him it they had brought In Nicodemue
or Bartimeus or Lazarus what evidence
they could have given In the East there
are professional witnesses They wait
about cowl-rooms to be hired to testify
Their evidence la always on the side that
pays the most money The witnesses
brought In to testify against Jeans were
not well advised They did not agree
among themselves Finally two swore
that Jesus said: "I will destroy this
temple that Is made with hands and In
three days I will build another made
without hands" This Jesus had never
said But tnree years before this Ile had
stated: "Destroy this temple and in
three days I will relies it up' This He
spoke not of the temple built by Herod
but of the temple of His body Law is
a sham if we have not holiest Judges
conscientious Jurors and truthful wit
nesse
Fourth—Prosectif ion The attorney
was Calaphas Lae high priest He
could preside Over the court and prose-
cute tile prisouer at tile cone time Be
asked Jesus about His disciples and His
doctrine Our Saviour replied that be
had spokenly In the world and in secret
Be bad said nothing Calaphas then
asked what He had to say of those who
testified against Him Jesus made no
reply 'rhe high priest then sold: "1
adjure Thee by the living God that
Thou tell us whether Thou be the Christ
the Son of the Blessed" He was ex'
cited He felt that no ordinary man
could be calm under such prosecution
Jesus quietly answered: "I am" That
Is "I am the Christ the Bon of God"
Fifth—The verdict The high pries
rent his clothes This was an expression
of horror and of great grief He desired
to impress the Council with the idea that
God had been blasphemed He then de
sired to know ' "what need they had of
any further witness" The testimony of
his witnesses was wortbles He had In
his Judgment forced Jesus to condemn'
Himself Be then took the vote "What
think yet And they all condemned Him
to be guilty of death" Jesus bad
friends in that Council They did the

taken But all may only mean a ma
Jority Jesus was condemned On the
charge of ulasphemy and this Impious
ape-king of God was not based on the
testimony of the witnesses but on the
assertion of Jesus He made himself
' trend with God TbN was not in any
sense blasphemy A wore groundless
