Barnsdall Nursing Home
residents honor Patrick’s Day
Wynona Wrap-Up
by Tennie Stone
Ivene Henley, Ombudsman,
joined Verla Branstetter, social
service/activity director at
Barnsdall Nursing Home, on
March 18 at 5:30 p.m. to honor
St. Patricks Day with live en-
tertainment.
St Patrick's decorations were
carried out throughout the
home setting the tone for the
leprechaun shenanigans that
took place during the program.
Entertainers were Dean and
Jackie Henley who sang Irish
songs and requests from all pre-
sent. Much to the enjoyment of
all present during the program
Dean dressed as a leprechaun
and did an Irish jib in honor of
her Irish grandfather, Jack
Lay, who often entertained his
children and grandchildren
with the Irish jib. One could
feel the presence and the minds
eye see the wee little people of
Irish folklore dancing with her
among the shamrock, pots of
gold and the Blarney stone.
The requests were many and
each time Dean and Jackie en-
tertain the audience take a trip
down memory lane with olde’
time camp meeting songs, moun-
tain ballads, western and coun-
try songs, songs of the pioneers,
old and new folk songs and gos-
pel songs. The residents also
enjoy the current hits. The lad-
ies try to introduce new songs
each time they entertain. If a
song is requested that they do
not know, they try to locate and
learn the song. At this point in
time Judy Collins has requested
Family Bible which they have
been unable to locate. This is
such a fun time for the residents
as well as the visitors that
Dean and Jackie have a pleas-
ant time, too.
At the Residents Council
meeting this month, Sherry
Jackson, RD/LD, dietitian at
BNH and Cedar Ridge, Paw-
huska, discussed dietary needs
and answered questions of all
present. The residents feel com-
fortable with Jackson because
she takes the time to listen to
them. She is to be commended
for taking that extra effort to
give of herself and of her time
to make the residents feel that
their thoughts and ideas are
important. They are pleased
and excited about the oppor-
tunity to plan a meal. Once a
month a resident may choose
their favorite food to be served.
Patricia Sink, dietary manager
at BNH is most proficient and
sees that the plans are carried
out. When Patricia is cooking
the aroma coming from her kit-
chen reminds one of Thanks-
giving and Christmas com-
bined.
The Suggestion Box is opened
at each council meeting. All
suggestions placed in the box
are read and the results pre-
sented at the next council meet-
ing. This is done with the sup-
port of Tammy Hendrix, admin-
istrator, who extends an open
invitation to the community to
attend the Residents Council
meeting each month.
Ivene Henley is a familiar
figure at the home and has a
good rapport with the residents
as their advocate. She also re-
ceives a warm reception from
and the cooperation of the
staff. Henley stated that
working together we can make
a difference to help those who
have given so much through
the years to keep their pride
and dignity, to have something
to do, someone to love and some-
thing to look forward to. And,
this is being done at BNH under
the leadership of Hendrix.
