Dapitol Spotlight
By Senator J. Berry Harrison
The General Conference Committee on Appropriations will begin
writing out state’s budget in the coming weeks.
This committee will be made up of about 60 members of the House
of Representatives and about 30 Senators.
The budget will be tight again this year, but it will be balanced,
the budget will be roughly the same size as last year, about $3.5
billion. However, our state has grown. The Legislature is required
to find new ways to meet the growing need for services without
raising taxes.
the Legislature must find about $55 million to fund the last year
of the landmark education reform act of 1990, about $25 million for
the increasing needs of the Department of Human Services and
about $20 million for higher education and Vo-Tech funding.
In order to fund these programs, we must secure new sources of rev-
enue. One way we can do this is to take money from our rainy day
fund and our cash flow reserve. We must do what is necessary to
keep Oklahoma moving forward.
The growth that is making this year's budget difficult is good for
our state and our economy in the long run. As our economy grows,
more money becomes available.
Encouraging growth is one way to strengthen our state against
hard economic times in the future.
Contact me if I can be of any assistance. At the State Senate, i can

Dear Editor,
As members of the Seniors Coalition, We want you to know that
most Seniors do not favor the Clinton Health Care Plan.
Under the Clinton plan, senior citizens will surely face drastic
cuts in Medicare coverage, lose their right to choose their own doc-
tors, face long waiting lines, and possibly be denied life-saving
medical treatment.
These matters are documented in a report, available at no charge,
from the 2-million member Seniors Coalition. We urge you to con-
tact the Coalition today at 703/ 273-5449, get a copy of their re-
port, then do stories that will alert people in our area to the real Look at All That Candy!
facts behind the Clinton Health Care Plan. Thank you. Taryn Smith (center), daughter of Manon Smith (left), examines
