PLO retains presence

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) —
As the last troops of a
multinational peacekeeping
force prepared to leave west
Beirut, a PLO leader said the
Palestinian guerrillas were
regrouping in Lebanon to
continue their war against
Israel.
Nayef Hawatmeh, leader of
the pro-Soviet Democratic
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine, told a news con-
ference Friday that the
guerrillas were gathering in the
eastern Bekaa Valley and the
north “for an inch-by-inch war
against Israel,” the rightist

radio said.

Local advisors
help businesses
By any normal measure, one of my clients should have
failed in business 18 months ago.
She started her firm in 1978 with very little money, then
signed a long-term lease in a high-rent district. Her com-
pany’s name is hard to pronounce and harder to remember.
Soon after opening, she became entangled in a costly part-
nership dispute.
Yet today she is on the brink of realizing her dream of
business success
Why? One reason is that she knows her field But perhaps
even more important, she developed a system for finding
and using outside talent - at practically no cost.
LOCAL EXPERTS
She created an advisory board of respected local experts
in management, cost accounting, administration and per-
sonnel. She has them meet regularly and consults with them
individually by phone - putting a wealth of talent and ex-
perience at her fingertips.
An advisory board is not a board of directors. Directors
are responsible for running the affairs of a corporation. Dir-
ectors are elected by the stockholders and frequently hold
shares in the company. They appoint and oversee the presi-
dent and other officers who carry out the operations of the
company.
On the other hand, advisory board members have no
company duties. They can be used by any business to pro-
vide perspective, advice, opinion, fresh ideas, new contacts
and long-range thinking on any topic.
The value of an advisory board comes from its total in-
dependence. Members are free of the company’s everyday
problems, so they can cite troublesome developments, act
a* devil’s advocate and be objective in criticizing the per-
formance of management

HOW TO START
If you think an advisory board could help your business,
here’s how to get one started:
Choose advisors with specific skills you need now. List
the problems your present staff is not resolving to your
satisfaction. Then start looking. Ask friends, neighbors,
your lawyer and accountant to help you in your search.
To attract advisors, appeal to their sense of prestige and
their desire to help. Many small-business owners, corporate
executives and college professors would be flattered by
your invitation. Advisory activity shows up well on their
resumes. It gives them credibility and demonstrates their
versatility
Look for prospects among retired executives, who fre-
quently have the need to be of value and prove their worth.
They can offer a wealth of experience and wisdom that
small business owners desperately need.
Meet with your advisors regularly, though not too often.
Since their contribution is mainly voluntary, don’t take ad-
vantage of their good will by overworking them. Monthly
or quarterly meetings are fine.
Meet in a pleasant, private place and provide coffee, tea
or other light refreshments Since your advisors may make
the difference between your success and failure, show them
the respect they deserve. If you meet st the company prem-
ises, have employees be especially courteous and attentive.
Announce a definite agenda well in advance of meetings.
Raise only the most important and pressing subjects, and
encourage free and open discussion and debate. Use em-
ployees at meetings only to provide facts, and have them
leave before discussion begins.
If possible, send your advisors home with specific topics
to explore. Give them progress reports on how you are
using their advice. This will help them - and you - appre-
ciate the important role they are playing in ycur company’s
affairs.

WASHINGTON (AP) -
Secretary of State George
Shultz says the United States
will move swiftly to get foreign
troops out of Lebanon, but it will
take long, hard negotiations to
secure peace in the Middle
East.
Under questioning by the
Senate Foreign Relations
Committee Friday, Shultz said
he and his aides have talked
about a timetable for with-
drawal of Israeli and Syrian
forces from Lebanon, but he
would not disclose it.
He added, however, that the
presence of foreign troops in the
war-torn country is “basically
disruptive and has to be en-
ded,” and the administration
will seek a synchronized with-
drawal “before people get too
settled in to where they are.”
“This is something that we
need to keep the pressure on,”
he added.
