WHERE DID YOU GET THAT CHRISTMAS CUSTOM?

DEAR ABBY I am going to be married in the spring,
which brings up a problem I don’t know how to handle
1 stood up for my girl friend, three years ago
At that time 1 promised her that when I got married she
could stand up for me My sister, who is two years
older than 1 am, is a nun of the Dominican Order, and three
years ago nuns couldn’t be in a wedding party or 1 would
not have made that promise to my girl friend Well, the
rules changed, and now my sister can participate in my
wedding, and 1 want her to And she wants to in the worst
way
I explained all this to my girl friend, and practically got
down on my knees and begged her to be a bridesmaid
instead She turned me down, saying if she couldn't stand
up for me she wouldn’t even come to my wedding
What would YOU do in my place?
SIS
DE AR SIS Id tell my girl friend that I will miss her
and I'd get off my knees.
DEAR ABBY Re Grandma and rice: Grandma hopes
that at her funeral someone will leave behind a bit of rice
from a wedding that just took place, and that those who see
it will smile at the joy it must have brought
Grandma is overreacting, and you aren't thinking too
clearly either Abby Obviously, neither of you has ever
seen a wedding turned into a disaster when a guest slips on
the rice and breaks a leg
I do not allow rice to be thrown in the church, in the
parish hall, or on any church property.
If the reception is at the country club, great Throw rice .
everywhere! HOUSTON PASTOR
DEAR PASTOR: You mean if someone breaks a leg at
the country club it’s all right?
What’s your problem? You’ll feel better if you get it off
your chest. Write to ABBY. Box 69700, Los Angeles, Cal.
90009. Per a personal reply enclose stamped, addressed
envelope.
Hate la write letters? Send 11 to Abby, Box 69700, Los

HOLIDAY BABYSITTERS
The Christmas and New Year
holidays often mean more
partygoing for parents and
more need for a babysitter’s
services The Oklahoma State
Medical Association makes the
following suggestions to assure
the wellbeing of your children
when you go out for an evening
II you have a small baby. your
babysitter should be an adult,
preferably an adult who has had
small children of their own
Their experience in raising will
assure that they are familiar
with the "small emergencies"
that accompany the caring of
any small baby if your children
are beyond the toddler age
your babysitter should he no
younger than fourteen years
old This is considered the
minimum age advisable
in case an emergency does
arise the sitter needs to know
where you will be at all times
and how you can be reached by
telephone Don’t say it Write it
The sitter should be given
specific instructions as to the
child's bedtime and any
limitations on the child's ac-
odad

tivity It pays to explain these in
front of the child so both will
know that they both know
Remember that the
babysitter’s job is to look after
the wellbeing of your children
Don’t load her down with
household chores If the duties
include feeding the child for
safety reasons she should not be
asked to cook the meal
Most parents have found it
unwise to permit babysitters to
entertain guests while they are
away Guests often distract the
babysitter from her primary
responsibility However if you
plan a long evening, it is well to
specify whether you object to
her taking a nap within hearing
distance of the children of
course
For the children’s and sitter s
security, you should instruct
her to keep the blinds drawn
the house well lighted and the
doors locked and to let no
stranger into the house If there
is a possibility that your friends
might stop by your house the
sitter should be told of this
In consideration of both the
sitter and the children try to
return home at the time you are
expected If this becomes im
possible, you should notify the
sitter at the earliest possible
time This will give her the
opportunity to notify her
parents or spouse that she will
be later than expected
Like the telephone numbers
any special instructions con
cerning the child should be
written out in detail in this way
there will be no question, either
for the sitter or the child as to
what you intended
Reliability, responsibility and
a certain amount of maturity
are the principal qualities to
look for when you employ a
sitter Since these cannot be
measured in advance, your
safest course is to make a
thorough check of her
