THE DEVALUATION of the dollar on the international
market is supposed to have a minimum of impact on the
average American according to economists It is a dent to the
national pride, the observers say
THE IMPAC T on the dev aluation of the U.S dollar has been felt
in the U S for years Due to irresponsible and idiotic domestic
spending herculean foreign aid programs that have all but
bankrupt the nation have caused an inflation that has
devaluated the dollar far below what the international rate is
going to be
THE DENT in the national pride, in lessening the value of the
American dollar on the market, is not near as severe as the dent
that has been made in the American taxpayer s pocket due to
the deficit spending and almost prohibitive tax the public is now
shouldering
ONE THING you can mark in your book is that the Russkies
are holding their tummies and guffawing They said years ago
that we would spend ourselves into their plans-and its getting
ever closer The loss of American pride is an equal inflation of
their ego

WASHINGTON UPI—Senate leaders fired off wires to-
day to half the chamber’s membership, urging them to
return from home and help resolve a hassle over for-
eign aid that continued to snag adjournment of Congress.
Because of heavy absenteeism among senators who
left for home without waiting for the formal ending of
the first session of the 92nd Congress, there was con-
cern among leaders that even if the aid impasse were
bro ken there would not be a quorum on hand for a vote.
Some opponents of continuing foreign aid at Current
levels refused to go along with a plan to allow spend-
ing at existing rates until March. They want to cut the
allowable rate by half.
A vote is set for 11 a.m. EST Friday on a move to
stop debate and to force a vote on the issue. Senate De-
mocratic leader Mike Mansfield said he had sent 50 tele-
grams to absent senators asking them to return to work.
Assistant GOP leader Robert P. Griffin said the aid
foes were unwilling so far to agree on any compromise
on the dispute.

It is of absolutely no help
to ask Edna Gray for one of
her recipes. She will happily
give it to you, but you won't
make it look and taste like
hers.
What that cook can do to food.'
She puts in this, combines it in
a special way, puts it in the
pans differently, or does some
other thing to make the food she
prepares incomparable. So
when you want to make a dish
resemble bers you just have to
get in her kitchen and watch.
This is the way I learned
to make the delicious morsels
she calls minature fruit cakes.
Mine are not carbon copies of
hers but I guess we can call
them reasonable facsimales.
The original was an Eagle

Like the most dramatic of
Nixon's other recent steps once
believed to be unthinkable—his
forthcoming trip to Peking and
his quest for more friendly
relations with Communist China
—the President prepared the
ground for devaluation for
months before taking the step
But again like the China trip
the announcement of Nixon's
approval of devaluation came
as a surprise The formal
communique issued after Nix-
ons summit meeting this week
with French President George
Pompidou said the two pres
idents “agreed to work toward
a relatively simple method for
devaluation of every currency
but the dollar
Now that Nixon has decided
to take the step. It is not
entirely clear just how devalua-
tion will be accomplished The
most likely method is an
a prompt realignment of
exchange rates through a increase in the $35-an-ounce
devaluation of the dollar and
revaluation of some other
currencies."
Gold Price Affected
The position of the once
proud Yankee dollar in world
commerce has slipped sharply
in the last 27 years The
prospects of dollar devaluation
seemed so remote in 1944 that
the Bretton Woods conference
which devised the post World
War II money system provided
official price of gold If other
currencies retain their present
values relative to gold, an
increase in the number of
dollars required to buy an
ounce of gold would reduce the
value of the dollar relative to
other money

Special guests for the meeting were Morris

King pointed out how Osage county will work

too hard. She uses only can-
died cherries and pineapple she
buys in the bulk (and sometimes
hard to come by) and she doesn’t
use anything else but pecans and
coconut None of the citron
or candied orange peel that give
fruit cake a bad name with
many.
Then the pans. The intrigu-
ing part of these cakes is their
size. So she uses some tart
pans.she likes the teflon lined
..but she also used some child’s
play muffin tins, so look ar-
ound in your daughter’s play
box for ideas.
Next the pans are greased and
you line each tiny cup with al-
unimun foil and then you gr-
ease the foil lining. .After that,
take your washed, lily-white
hands and get the amount of
cake mixture you think will fill
the pans (practice will help you)
and mash it down in the cups
so that you know some of the
batter gets into every bit of
the bottom and that there are
no air holes. Push hard. This
is what gives them their nice
uniform shape. Too, it makes
the cakes more attractive, says
Edna, if you always see that one
of the candied cherries is on the
very top of each cake.
Bake them only until they
seem dry. Do not worry
about browning. It you wait
for that they will probably be
“just dry them out."
Hey. I forgot to tell you bow
to mix them. It's so simple.
Just put the fruit and nuts and
coconut in a large mixing bowl,
pour the milk over, and let it
set on your kitchen counter
over night. The next morning
you may have to give it a stir,
but it will probably be mixed
on its own.
After they are baked, clear
your buffet of all the Christ-
mas wrappings, scotch tape and
sissors and put a pretty three-
tiered snack plate in the center.
Paper lace doilies look pretty
under the cakes and if you have
a few sprigs of holly stick them
here and there.

S—N FRIDAY . DECEMBER 17, 1971
GENERAL TENDENCIES You certainly get
yourself into a real mess today or tonight if
you take chances in any way, or do not act with restraint
and patience Look for some tiresome tasks to do, or some
studies that will round out your information so you can be
more successful at a later date when greater opportunities
arise
ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr 19) Yesterday was fine for
putting a new plan in operation, but now you have to get
into the details of such New contacts must not be accepted
immediately; wait until you know them better Read some
tonight
TAURUS (Apr 20 to May 20) You feel like reneging on
some responsibility you have willingly assumed, but this
would cause you to lose prestige and profit Don't be too
demanding with mate, or there is trouble Use diplomacy
instead
GEMINI (May 21 to June 21) Don't get into further
discussions with associates now or you could spoil the fine
plans previously made Make sure you carry through with
every promise vou have made Handle finances well
MOON CHILDREN (June 22 to July 21) If you are
critical of co-workers you gain only their ire which could be
quite dangerous Show that you are cooperative instead
Thoughtfulness shown to close ties brings fine results.
LEO (July 22 to Aug 21) You had better get to work on
duties that are important instead of trying to continue with
the fun you had yesterday If you try to force your
attentions on one who charms you, you lose out Be happy
with progress already made
VIRGO (Aug 22 to Sept 22) Some controversial subject
could lead to a big argument at home, so take care you do
not start one Get busy and handle some important matter
early Make little improvements around the house
LIBRA (Sept 23 to Oct 22) Take care you are not
careless in driving or in motion of any kind and then you
can avoid an accident Try not to argue or lose your temper
Keep an eve on your wallet while shopping
SCORPIO (Oct 23 to Nov 21) There are certain things
you want that cannot be bought with money, so use ethical
means and they art yours Do not put off any repairs to
property that could be more costly later on Get them done
now
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 to Dec 21) You had better be
tactful instead of blunt with others, or you could get
yourself into a peck of trouble Do not offer advice unless it
is asked for Steer clear of the social affairs in p m where
arguments could develop
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 to Jan 20) There are some
limitations you have to get nd of today so that you do not
have trouble with a valuable associate Try to be of help to
friends who are having rough sledding Forget own woes that
way
AQUARIUS (Jan 21 to Feb 19) Don't take over any
other person's problem, or you will have grief for your
pains However, do nothing that can irk one who is in a
prominent position This is not a good day for lavish
entertaining Stick to whatever is of a practical nature
PISCES (Feb 20 to Mar 20) Put aside those worldly
matters for a day or so since others are in a mood to
criticize and you would only have disappointments now Get
