Cassius Clay Resigned--To Jail Term
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPI)—Cassius
Clay is resigned.
If he’s gotta go, he’s gotta go,
he says.
It’ll be a little strange taking
a fall because he has never
taken one like this before but
he’s confident he can handle it
and from the way he talks he’s
even looking forward to it.
“I really wanna go to jail to
tell you the truth,” he said. “I
just think it’ll be a good thing
when I go to jail. We’ll see a
lotta things happen.”
Clay made the statement
during a stopover here the other
day. He didn’t elaborate on
what he expects to happen if
the Supreme Court turns down
his appeal and he goes to jail
for refusing to serve in the
Army but he did say his image
will grow tremendously if he
must go behind bars.
Cassius Clay ought not count
on that. People have a way of Frazier and Clay but Clay
forgetting a man who goes off doesn’t get particularly excited
to jail. No matter how much a about such talk.
martyr he fancies himself. “Frazier wants to fight me,”
There was one other thing says Clay, “but what has
Cassius Clay didn’t say. He happened is that various groups
didn’t say he could beat any in Philadelphia have asked to

Maybe in six months from now told them yes, I’d fight him, if
but not today because he hasn’t they can get the permission and
been in a ring for a year and a the licenses. I’m not goin’ in
half and he’s 20 pounds beggin’, crawlin’ or pleadin’ just
overweight despite the fact he to fight. If they can get it and I
does some running to try to can be accepted, good. And if
stay halfway in shape. they don’t, still good.”
Fans Are Being Cheated Cassius Clay undoubtedly
“Right now,” says Cassius realizes there is little chance
Clay, “the heavyweight division the way things are now of his
is at a standstill. The only way ever getting into a ring with Joe
it could be straightened out Frazier for a title fight. Still
would be for me to fight again, he’s more than willing to talk

From time to time, different “I think a fight between me
interests talk of staging a and Frazier would be bigger
championship fight between Joe than any fight I fought up to
now. Even the Sonny Liston
fight and the Focyd Patterson
fight because Frazier is young,
Frazier’s good, he’s strong and
he’s undefeated. I’ve been off
the air almost two years. Lotta
problems, mentally, and this
and that. He’s got that goin’ for
him. It’ll take me some time to
get in shape. I’ll probably never
get like I wuz. But this might
make it more even. Because
when I was in fightin’ shape
nobody would bet against me.”
Money Problems
One of the problems Cassius
Clay was referring to has
nothing to do with his appeal
before the Supreme Court. That
problem is money, or more
specifically, where can he get
his hands on some? His
expenses have been tremendous
what with all those legal
appeals plus that alimony for
his first wife.
On his visit here, Cassius
Clay was going over detals for
a personal speaking tour and a right but I’d sure miss hearing
documentary which originally him run himself down all the

Big Burbank Bass
Chris Johnson, 9, son of D. R. Johnson of Burbank, proudly dis-
plays the five and one-half pound lunker his father caught Wednes-
day morning in a private pond near Burbank. Johnson was using
a plastic worm and said his prize put up a terrific fight, breaking
water once and then diving deep into some moss and weeds, making
it necessary for him to wade in to dislodge the fish. (J-C Photo).
