The faculty at Indian Camp School reported results Wed-
nesday of a new idea to encourage students to read tor en-
joyment instead of watching television
Wednesday the students from first through eighth grades with
the five Indian Camp teachers and Ben Sanders, principal,
stopped all activities for a 45-minute period, opened the doors of
all the classrooms and "everyone read" (or was read to), ac-
cording to one of the teachers, Mrs Loretta Kuykendall.
Mrs Kuykendall said the idea was the brainchild of Mrs Ann
Endress, teacher of the 7th and Sth grades
She said the older and younger grades were mixed for the
reading period The seventh and eighth grade students read
with the younger ones All the doors were opened and students
were permitted to relax on the hallway floor and in the locker
rooms
Students had been informed of the new period earlier and had
made their reading selection from the school library.
Awareness of silence
Mrs Kuykendall said the students and teachers were only a
few minutes into the reading period when some of the students
suddenly became aware of ‘ the silence All the classroom doors
were open, but there was no noise; everyone was quiet", she
said They remained that way
She said Mrs Endress had gotten the idea and felt it was
worth a try when the other teachers and the principal agreed
that children spend too much time watching television for en-
joyment when they could be learning to enjoy good books
Wednesday was the first session The sessions will continue
each week the teacher said "We've already come up with
another addition for next time " She said they realized that the
school's media center with sound headphones enabling as many
as 10 students to listen to the same thing at once could be used
during the reading period for those who cannot read "We
thought of it after analyzing our period today and we'll try it
next week
Next week, and the week after, if the success and enjoyment
of the students continue, maybe more new ideas will be con-
ceived The Indian Camp staff believes its possible
