U. S. Rep. Lucas....
Continued from page 1
President Bush has said will not be extended further, is
April 18, 2008. However, Lucas said he thinks that
the bill will be extended to 2009 so that the new ad-
ministration can address the problem.
Hall asked if he thought we are in a recession. Lucas
said he thought the east and west coasts could be con-
sidered to be in a recession. "The question,” he said,
"is how long it will last. Here, though, so far, we've
been spared. We're a little island of prosperity."
On the subject of energy, he said, "I've always been
a big proponent of wind energy," and he discussed the
current and planned wind farms in Oklahoma.
He said ethanol additive for gasoline has been de-
creed by the Clean Air Act, but that he considers corn
to be a mature ethanol product, that the future in etha-
nol lies in cellulosic (grass) resources. Several corn etha-
nol plants are planned for Oklahoma and when the
price of corn drops below $5 he thinks building will
proceed on them.
He discussed the war in Iraq. "Listen to McCain and
to both Clinton and Obama," he said. "Hear what they
say. They understand we have the tiger by the tail and
we can't just let go all at once."
His discussion about the war - and the entire meet-
ing - can be seen on Perry Information Network broad-
casts at 2:30 p.m. Monday. 2 p.m. Wednesday and 6
p.m. Thursday.
Carol Moody of Sapulpa, a self-employed small-busi-
ness owner, and Kristie Darien, executive director of
the legislative office of the National Association for
the Self-Employed, asked his views on healthcare for
employees and owners of small businesses. Lucas in-
dicated that he thinks the problem will be addressed
by the next Congress and said he would prefer a plan
(the German model) that would help the individual with
health insurance instead of having a national health
plan (the British or Canadian model) or mandating that
employers supply insurance.
Hall asked, assuming that Lucas supports John
McCain for president, who he might pick for a run-
ning mate.
Lucas said he thought McCain should "reach out-
side the Beltway" for an experienced executive - “a
governor, 50ish," - from the west or east coast or the
Midwest.
The next question drew a laugh: "Do you think
Obama would ask Hillary to run as his vice president?"
Seemingly groping for the right words and supressing
a grin. Lucas finally said, "I can't say what I'm think-
ing. so I'll just say ‘No.’"
