THE FIRST RUN SCORED BY THE LADY MAROONS WAS by Christy Allen in the first inning
of this very long game. The Lady Maroons fought a tough battle to just come in a little short. But defensively
the Maroons were extremely tough. (Staff photo.)
The Lady Maroons played their
longest game of the season against
the Chisholm Lady Longhorns
Saturday, September 9, game time
starting at 2 p m. The two teams
battled it out for 11 innings with
the score being tied 1-1 until the
eleventh.
Perry's Lady Maroons tough
defense held Chisholm to one run
for 10 hard fought innings, never
allowing more than five batters to
take the plate in each inning.
In six of those 10 innings, it was
three up, three down. The Lady
Maroons turned four double plays
in the 11 innings and only
committed one error.
Leading Perry w ith two hits each
were Laci Jackson and Leigha
Layton. Kaelee Johnson. Timory
Brand, Bonnie Hight and Autumn
Bolay all had one each with
Hight's being a stand-up double.
The Lady Longhorns were able
to score three runs on three hits in
the top of the eleventh. Perry
came back and was able to score
two runs, but that w as not enough,
as the final score after 11 innings
was Chisholm 4, Perry 3.
Hight was the pitcher for the
Lady Maroons with Johnson
coming in as relief for the last two
batters in the eleventh Jackson
was behind the plate the entire
game.

BASKETBALL
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP)—
Coach Bob Knight was fired by
Indiana University for what was
called a pattern of unacceptable
behavior. The firing ended
Knight’s 29-year relationship with
the school at which he helped
build one of college basketball's
most storied programs.
Indiana president Myles Brand
said Knight violated the “zero-tol-
erance" conduct policy imple-
mented in May after an investiga-
tion into accusations he choked
one of his players during prac-
tice in 1997, an act caught on
videotape.
Knight leaves Indiana with a
661-240 record. Besides his three
NCAA championships, Knight led
the Hoosiers to 11 Big Ten titles
and was undefeated in 1976, the
last time a college basketball team
accomplished the leat. He also
coached Michael Jordan and the
U.S. men's basketball team to the
gold medal at the 1984 Los An-
geles Games.
The Hoosiers have failed to ad-
vance past the second round ot the
NCAA tournament since 1994.
Knight had a 763-290 record
overall, including six years at
to win the U.S. Open.
The youngest champion since
Sampras won the first of his four
U.S. Open titles a decade ago,
Safin, 20, won his first major title
in the most lopsided victory over
a former champion in 25 years.
Sampras, holder of 13 Grand
Slam titles, had lost only twice be-
fore in a major final — against
Stefan Edberg in the 1992 U.S.
Open and Andre Agassi in the
1995 Australian Open.
No one had lost in the Open fi-
nal so badly since Edberg beat Jim
Courier in 1991. And no former
champion had gone down so hard
since Jimmy Connors lost to
Manuel Orantes in 1975.
Safin is only the second Russian
to capture a Grand Slam title.
Yevgeny Kafelnikov won the 1996
French and 1999 Australian
Opens.
On Saturday, third-seeded Venus
Williams beat No. 2 Lindsay Dav-
enport 6-4, 7-5 for the women's
singles championship. Williams,
who beat Davenport at Wimble-
don to start her current 26-match
winning streak and win her first
Grand Slam title, captured the U.S.
Open title her sister, Serena, won

The Perry JV football team
traveled to Fairview last night. The
game was not pretty. The final
score was 33 to 8.
The Maroons came out and had
some mistakes that cost them the
