Husband Looking for Job
Is Advised to Start Truckin’
Editorial Cartoons That Cover The Entire Political Spectum!
by Abigail Van Buren

DEAR ABBY: This letter is in
response to "Totally Lost in North
Carolina," whose husband cannot or
will not keep a job. She said he
didn't like to work and “somehow he
always messes up and gets fired or
quits.”
1 had similar problems with my
husband. He would keep a job no
more than six months maximum.
He finally heard about a program
called "Operation Improvement."
The people there gave him an apti-
tude test, suggested a job he would
never have considered on his own
truck driving — and paid for his
training.
He’s been driving a truck for six
years now and loves his job. I’m not
suggesting truck driving for this
gal’s husband, but he should take
an aptitude test and find something
he’ll be happy doing. If he doesn’t,
he’ll continue to go from job to job
and create stress for the whole
family 1 wish them the best of luck,
and as much happiness as my hus-

She said she'd like to throw him
out, but was afraid he wouldn’t
leave. I told her to draw the
line; from my perspective, she’d
have one less mouth to feed.

also thought she was being

symptoms is difficulty holding cer-

“niche” as a talented photographer

Perhaps there’s another choice
for “Totally Lost" other than evict-
ing her husband, and another
reason for his problem other than
irresponsibility.

be an underlying cause or causes for
his occupational failures. I offer
three possibilities:
1. He may be functionally illiter-
ate. Many people work in low-level,
nonskilled jobs that are unsatisfy-
ing because these are the only jobs
that don’t require reading skills.
When confronted with work that is
equal to their intelligence but
beyond their level of literacy, they
are unproductive and either get
fired or quit.
2. He may have adult attention
deficit disorder and not know it.
Many adults carry this problem
from childhood into adulthood and
suffer because of it, not realizing
the underlying reason for their lack
of achievement.
3. There may be health problems
underlying his apparent laziness.

on congressional seats and census counts:
By The Associated Press
Oklahoma's editorial writers express their opinions on a variety of topics. Here is a sampling:
Oklahoma has grown at a pretty fair clip — nearly 7 percent — since the 1990 census, but probably not
fast enough to prevent the loss of one of its six seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Oklahoma has been close before but, at least over the past four decades, it has managed to hold on to six
seats. Our luck may have run out.
The 435 House seats are reapportioned among the states following each decennial census. One seat is
assigned to each state, regardless of population, and then the remaining 335 are apportioned based on how
each state’s population compares with all of the others.
Oklahoma once had nine congressional seats but out-migration during the Dust Bowl years caused it to
lose one seat following the 1940 census and two more following the 1950 count.
In 1970 Oklahoma’s sixth seat was the last one assigned.
Again in 1990 it was on the bubble, largely because population losses from 1987-89, due to the oil bust,
limited overall population growth for the decade of the ’80s.
Although Oklahoma has grown in the ’90s, based on 1999 population estimates, it has not grown as fast
as its neighboring states or, especially, the far western states which have seen increases of from 20 percent
to, in the case of Nevada, more than 50 percent.
There is not much that can be done to save our sixth seat. With census day only three months away there
isn't time to make a lot of new babies. Back in 1989 one Oklahoma population-watcher suggested, half
seriously, that the state wage an advertising campaign asking everyone who claims a connection with Ok-
lahoma to come home for the census....
About all we can do is make sure that everyone who is here is counted, let the process take its course
and prepare for the diminished political clout that the loss of a congressional seat will mean.
