Carl and Bertha Smith
Seventy years of marriage—to
the same partner—a milestone
not many couples attain, but Carl
and Bertha Smith are among
those elite.
A come and go reception will
be held in their honor Sunday,
Feb. 7, 1999, at Zion Lutheran
Church, five miles east of Perry.
The event will be held from 2 to
3:30 p.m. and will be hosted by
their son and daughter and spous-
es, Gene and Marcie Smith and
Darlene and Jack Roads, and their
grandchildren and great grand-
children.
Carl Smith and the former
Bertha Sloan were married Feb.
11,1929, at Stillwater, OK.
Smith is the son of the late Peter
J. and Margaret (Ritthaler) Smith.
He was born on a farm southeast
of Perry, the fifth of 10 children,
and attended Pioneer rural school
through the sixth grade. On Dec.
23,1998, Smith observed his 95th
birthday.
Mrs. Smith is the daughter of
the late John H. and Lutishia
(Jordan) Sloan. The youngest of
10 children, she was born in
Ozark county, MO, and moved to
Noble County with her family as
a child. She attended Windy
Center rural school through the
eighth grade.
The young men of the Smith
family were music lovers and
played various instruments at
local "barn dances." The young-
sters of the Sloan family loved to
dance and attended many "barn
dances." At one of those events,
Smith says he looked over the
dance floor and there was "the
purtiest girl I'd ever seen."
During the 10 years following
their marriage, the Smiths farmed
in several locations in the county.
They became parents of a son and
daughter, Eugene and Darlene. In
1946, the Smith family moved to
1206 Holly street in Perry. The
couple continued to live their un-
til November, 1994, when they
moved to Green Valley Nursing
Home.
Following their move to Perry,
Smith worked in the oilfields for
Voigt-Frailey and Marty Mc-
Quain. His last employer before
his retirement was Perry
Construction company. After
retiring, Smith did odd jobs of
carpentry, painting and so forth.
He suffered a severe heart attack
Feb. 29,1984, and was forced to
retire again. Smith maintained a
small garden and enjoyed doing
yard work.
Mrs. Smith worked as a clerk
for many years for Zeke Walker
at Perry Livestock Sale barn. She
also worked as a waitress at
Sooners Corner restaurant when
it was first opened and later as
cashier and hostess at Cherokee
Strip restaurant. She was also
employed as a clerk at T & L
Ranchwear, owned and operated
by Tim Endicott and Larry Voise.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed working in
her flower beds and keeping
house for her family.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith are mem-
bers of Zion Lutheran Church
where Smith taught Sunday
School classes for approximate-
ly 30 years and Mrs. Smith was
a charter member of the Ladies
Aid that evolved into the Women
of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America of which
she is still a member. They served
as sponsors of the Luther League
youth group and Smith sang in
the church choir for many years.
The Smiths are proud of their
12 grandchildren and their
spouses, 22 great grandchildren
and 7 great great grandchildren.
The couple requests only the
gift of your presence, your
prayers and the reminders of the
love and friendship that has been
theirs throughout the past 70
years.
Freddie Prinze savors star status
NEW YORK(AP) — Freddie wasn’t lost on Prinze.
Prinze Jr. savors his fledgling
star status with a generous amount
of awe at his good fortune.
“I didn’t think things would hap-
pen this quickly,” says Prinze, 22,
star of the new romantic comedy
“She’s All That” with Rachael
Leigh Cook.
Prinze landed the part of leading
man after playing smaller roles
in a handful of movies, including
a supporting role in the 1997 teen
slasher hit, “I Know What You Did
Last Summer.”
“This is where I wanted to be, but
this isn’t where I thought I would
be,” Prinze said in Wednesday’s
Daily News. “I saw it taking a bit
more time.”
Prinze, who was 10 months old
when his father committed suicide
in 1977, is determined to make it
on his own, despite his name
recognition. His father, the comic
who starred in “Chico and the
Man,” was 22 when he shot him-
self.
“She’s All That” opens this Fri-
day, Jan. 29 — the same day his
father died 22 years ago. The irony
“I was like, “ What?’ Is this some
kind of sick joke? Now that was
kind of trippy,” he said.
