Guthrie To
Reenact 1878
Baseball Game
A reenactment of an 1878
baseball game has been set
for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June
29, in the Cottonwood Flats
area of Guthrie.
Players and umpires from
Guthrie civic clubs will wear
19th century uniforms and
use equipment of that era.
In 1878, a batter was al-
lowed four strikes and nine
balls were required for a walk.
The ball was pitched under-
handed from 45 feet away af-
ter a batter asked for high or
low pitch. Batters often used
split grips on the bat in those
days, a batter hit by a pitch
was not awarded first base
and a runner hit by a batted
ball was not out.
Bill Gorden of Past Ball
Inc., Oklahoma City, re-
searched the rules that will be
followed in the reenactment
game.
The game will be open to
the public without charge.
Vendors will sell root beer
and peanuts. Special seating
facilities will be provided for
women who attend wearing
1870s attire.
For more information, per-
sons are asked to contact the
Oklahoma Territorial Muse-
um at (405) 282-1889.
