The importance of water
was the topic of a lesson
presented by Nila Shobe at
the Tuesday, Oct. 22, meet-
ing of TOPS OK No. 465,
Perry at the Church of the
Nazarene.
Mrs. Shobe told members
water is necessary for res-
piration, tissue cleansing
and energy. She urged
drinking of water whenever
one thinks of it. If a body
does not receive enough
water, Mrs. Shobe said, a
drought warning is issued
and the kidneys slow down
as an emergency precaution
to keep fluids in. Recom-
mended are eight 8-ounce
glasses of water per day.
Water is especially im-
portant to those trying to
lose weight, Mrs. Shobe
said. Not only does drinking
lots of water suppress hun-
ger, it also helps metabolize
fat. If one does not receive
enough water, she told the
group, the liver metabolizes
less fat and that excess is
stored by the body. Even
those who retain water can
benefit from drinking more,
Mrs. Shobe said. An aver-
age person should drink ap-
proximately two quarts of
water per day. The over-
weight person, she said,
should drink an additional
eight-ounce glass for every
25 pounds above his or her
normal weight.
Additional water also
should be added to one’s
consumption of liquids if the
weather is hot and dry or if
one exercises.
Mrs. Shobe ended her les-
son with a humorous article,
“Telltale Packages," that
told of the experiences of an
attempt to obtain a forbid-
den late-night snack.
Laura O’Connor volun-
teered to present the lesson
for the Oct. 29 meeting.
The business session was
conducted by Bessie Maine,
group leader.
Competition continued in
the High Flyer and Money-
line contests. Mrs. Maine
announced only two persons
