fishermen in the Southeast
worked feverishly to recover
from bitter cold that caused
millions of dollars in damage to
their industries.
The death count from the
coldest December weather in 50
years rose to 304.
A maze of storms dumped
snow and rain from the Rockies
to the Mississippi Valley and
south to the Gulf Coast
south to the Gulf Coast.
Concordia, Kan , had 5 inches
of snow by midnight Tuesday
and up to 8 inches were
predicted for Missouri.
Freezing rain spread a layer
of ice from Oklahoma to the
Carolinas.
“It’s a mess, that's what it
is,” said Bill Carle, a
meteorologist with the National
Weather Service. “In all, 33
states are covered by some
kind of warnings, watches or
advisories."
Forecasters said the snow in
the Plains would lower tem-
peratures, but not to the
record-setting levels of the past
week.
“It will be becoming colder
over the central United States,”
Carle said, “but we won’t be
returning to the record cold.”
Officials in the Southeast
worked to recover from bitter
cold and ice that caused
millions of dollars in damage to
fruit crops, killed millions of
fish off the Gulf Coast and
forced water emergencies in
three states
An inch of ice coated
Southern roads Tuesday. High-
ways, schools, government of-
fices and businesses were
closed for several hours in
Birmingham. Ala., before
warm Gulf Coast breezes began
But the higher temperatures
came too late to save the citrus
crop. Damage estimates were
at least $500 million in Florida
and at least $125 million to
Texas’ Lower Rio Grande
Valley.
"It looks like the crop we got
right now is a total loss,” said
one Texas grower. “We hope
the plants themselves survive
and come back ”
SUSPENDED
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.
(UPI)
Reserve forward
Terry Graves has been sus-
pended indefinitely from the
Penn State basketball team,
coach Bruce Parkhill said
Thursday.
Parkhill said the suspension
of the 6-foot-6 sophomore from
Washington, D.C., was due to a
“couple of things" related to
academics. He said the suspen-
sion was "indefinite."
Graves, who was not availa-
ble for comment, had been
Penn State’s first frontcourt
substitute and was averaging
6.8 points and 3.0 rebounds a
game for the Lions.
