(UPI) — The Beetle Bailey
comic strip has been put on
probation at the Traverse City
Record-Eagle because readers
do not like the leering and
sexist attitudes of some of its
characters.
Editor Jim Herman placed
the strip on probation after
several readers complained the
comic’s author, Mort Walker,
was "offensively sexist."
Herman said Sunday the
measure was taken because of
the way the strip’s GIs gawk
and leer whenever the strip’s
Miss Buxley is featured.
Walker, in a letter to the
newspaper, said, "I am strong-
ly against sexism ... I believe
in women having the opportuni-
ty to fulfill themselves ... But I
don’t believe girl-watching is
sexist."
Walker said he was not the
only comic strip artist under
fire.
"My colleagues report simi-
lar problems ... Hagar and
Andy Capp glorify alcoholism
... Garfield encourages cruelty
to animals," he said. "Blondie
enforces sexual stereotyping ...
Lucy depicts negative female
traits in her treatment of
Charlie Brown. Superman is
racist. Snuffy Smith is vulgar.”
Judge Cannon
Clarifies Order
OKLAHOMA CITY (UPI) -
State school land leased by
government entities will not
have to be sold. District Judge
Joe Cannon said Thursday.
Cannon said he had issued an
order clarfying his previous
order requiring the state School
Land Commission to sell the
land it had been leasing.
The judge said his original
order "never applied" to any of
the leases owned by govern-
ment entities, such as Ok-
lahoma State University, the
state Tourism Department and
South Oklahoma City Junior
College.
"How this got misconstrued I
don’t know," Cannon said.
Cannon said his latest order
exempts all leases held by
public bodies.
"It is not really a change but
a clarification," he said.
