MASCOT DIED
CHICAGO (UPI) - Chico,
the Shedd Aquarium’s unofficial
mascot and one of only three
fresh-water dolphins in captivi-
ty in the United States, died —
apparently from old age.
Chico, the aquarium's
Amazon River dolphin, was
believed to be 18 years old,
aquarium spokeswoman Becky
Barefoot said Monday. An
autopsy was scheduled.
"For many years Chico was
the unofficial mascot of the
aquarium and received a lot of
attention and affection from the
aquarium staff," aquarium
director William P. Braker
said. "We are all deeply
saddened by his loss."
Born in Peru, Chico was
shipped by air to the United
States when he was 2.
He had been sick for several
days but died Monday before a
veterinarian could treat him.
