Of A Puppy
FULLERTON, Calif.(UPI) -
A German shepherd named
Mac used his head to save the
life of a puppy hanging from a
fence post by his collar, and the
dog's owner is amazed at the
display of intelligence.
Geneva Hance and her
husband were in their home
when they heard Mac barking
and scratching on the screen
door. When she looked outside,
Barney, their Boston Terrier,
was hanging unconscious by his
collar on a fence post.
Mac was standing below the
7-month-old terrier, balancing
the puppy on his head and
relieving the pressure on his
neck.
"I think if he hadn't kept the
dog up in the air, it would have
been too late when I got there,"
Mrs. Hance said "He just
loved that dog.”
Mrs. Hance took Barney-
inside the house and revived
him with mouth-to-mouth resus-
citation.

Die Together
STOCKTON, Calif. (UPI) -
The father of a sheriff’s deputy
shot by a gun-toting woman
suffered a heart attack while
rushing to the hospital to see
his son — and the two died
within minutes of each other.
San Joaquin County Sheriff’s
Deputy Michael Coleman, 30,
the department's "Officer of
The Year" two years ago, went
with two other narcotics offic-
ers to search the home of a
woman Thursday.
The other officers said Karen
Allen first slammed the door in
their face. When Coleman
opened the door again, he was
shot in the chest. The other
officers returned fire, wounding
Ms. Allen.
Coleman's father, Floyd, 70,
who had been an auxiliary
deputy for 28 years and was
master of the sheriff depart-
ment’s pistol range, was being
rushed to the hospital when he
suffered a heart attack.
He was taken inside where
emergency teams worked on
both the father and son, who
died within minutes of each
other.
Ms. Allen, who will face
murder charges when she is
released from the hospital,
required surgery for her three
wounds, but was reported in
stable condition.
POT TAX
WEAVERVILLE, Calif.
(UPI) — The district attorney
is seeking a ballot initiative
that would tax Trinity County’s
annual $150 million illegal
marijuana crop.
Prosecutor Ron Barbatoe said
Monday he would ask the
county Board of Supervisors for
approval to place the tax issue
on the November ballot.
The proposal would allow
sheriff’s deputies to seize a
marijuana grower’s property
for back taxes at the same time
an illegal crop is seized,
Barbatoe said.
The tax would be at a rate of
100 percent of the San
Francisco market value of the
weed, he said.
Last year officials confiscated
$150 million worth of marijua-
na. Under Sheriff Dave Laf-
franchini said.

GLAUCOMA’S WARNING DANIEL L ADAMS
SIGNS
Any unusual pressure in
the eyes may be a sign of
glaucoma. Only early diag-
nosis and treatment can
prevent loss of vision.
Glaucoma is an abnor-
mal condition in which the
watery fluid that flows
through the eye fails to
drain as it should. Pressure
builds up on the optic
nerve. If the pressure con-
tinues without relief, the
optic nerve will be dam-
aged and so will your ab-
ility to see well.
In its early stages, glau-
coma can be controlled
with medication to keep the
pressure down. If that
doesn't do the job, surgery
can be performed to pro-
vide another outlet for the
fluid
----OPTOMETRIST --------
But glaucoma is an in-
sidious disease. It can
sneak up on you without
your knowing it and cause
serious eye damage before
it’s discovered. That’s an-
other reason why it's so
important to have your
eyes checked regularly.
Your eye doctor is trained
to look for signs of any
disease as well as structur-
al errors of the eye that
cause vision problems.
No one should take chan-
ces with his eyesight —
especially when early de-
tection of a disease can
make a vital difference in
saving it.
