LONGS OF GARBER
Much is said of the “great
commission” which our
Lord gave to His apostles
just before His ascension.
We wonder whether our lis-
teners have ever examined
the various records of this
commission carefully.
This “great commission”
does not say one word about
“the preaching of the cross”
or “the gospel of the grace
of God.” The “gospel”
which they were sent to
preach was very evidently
the same “gospel” they had
been preaching-the Gospel
of the Kingdom-only they
could now declare, as Peter
did at Pentecost, that the
when, convicted of their
sins, they asked: “What shall
we do?” he did not say:
“Believe on Christ who died
for your sins.” He rather
commanded them to “repent
and be baptized every one...
for the remission of sins”
(Acts 2:38).
But after Christ and His
Kingdom were again re-
jected, God interrupted the
prophetic program and sent
Paul forth to proclaim “the
preaching of the cross” and
“the gospel of the grace of
God.” In 11 Cor. 5:14-21
this apostle proclaims “the
love of Christ” who “died
King had risen from the dead for all and instructs us as to
and would still some day our “great commission,

New Research May
Help Prevent Cancers
The National Cancer In-
stitute (NCI) will explore
the use of vitamins to help
prevent cancer.
The new Chemo preven-
tion Program is aimed at
finding ways to halt or
reverse the development of
cancer in people already
exposed to cancer-causing
agents (carcinogens) or po
tential carcinogens. Such
agents as beta-carotene, a
common dietary source of
vitamin A, which is being
tested in clinical trials; and
vitamins C and E, which are
being examined in labora-
tories; may prevent, inhibit
or reverse cancer develop-
ments at the cellular level.
Natural Vitamin A is known
to have toxic effects in
animals, particularly when
given in high doses. Re-
searchers are now trying to
develop synthetic substi-
tutes that are as effective,
but non-toxic.
Until these studies are
complete, experts recom-
mend that the best way to
obtain minimal daily re-
quirements of vitamins,
minerals and protein, is
through a balanced diet
that includes ample fresh
fruits and vegetables.

GROWING CHILD
(Continued from front page)
The youngster dawdles and
you think you will never finish
a day in 24 hours. When you
press him to hurry or cooper-
ate better, hebecomes explosive.
How to cope? There are sev-
eral approaches:
Make it a habit to talk about
the next thing that will happen:
"Pretty soon we’re going to
grandmother’s. We”ll leave in
five minutes.”
Tell him to say goodbye to
whatever he’s doing or to whom-
ever is present
Entice him away. "Fm going
to show you some magic when we
get to the kitchen,” and reward
him with the demonstration of
something simple like a string
game.
Offer him a choice. "Do you
want to walk or shall I carry
you?" Then abide by his de-
cision.
