In either instance, the hunter is
not visible. Peer noted some hunters
are tieing bands of fluorescent
orange to overhead limbs and tree
trunks to make others aware of
their locations.
Lack of target identification can
be tragic. Shooting at sound or
movement should never be done.
Shots should be attempted only
when the target is clearly identified
in a zone of fire that does not
imperil another hunter or property.
A recent Pennsylvania study of
turkey hunting accidents shows
147 of 229 (64 percent) over a
nine-year period resulted in hunters
being shot when mistaken for
game.
The spring gobbler hunt this
spring should be safer because it is
limited to shotguns only; rifles and
handguns are prohibited. The
season opens April 7 and runs
through May 7. Season bag limits

Bad judgment causes
turkey hunt accidents
Faulty hunter judgment caused
three turkey hunting firearms
accidents last spring, none of them
fatal, according to Hunter Educa-
tion Coordinator J. D. Peer of the
Oklahoma Department of Wildlife
Conservation.
“Obviously violation of a safe
firing zone while hunting is a
major contributor to firearms
accidents” remarked Peer, “but
another, perhaps even greater
cause of hunting accidents is in-
correct identification of the target.”
Two mishaps occurred when
hunters fired at turkeys and struck

for $7.50 at license dealers through-
out the state.

Sharpen hooks
to land fish
Smart fishermen are "lookin’ sharp"
because, unfortunately, a hooked fish
isn't always a caught fish. Studies show
that dull hooks can cost fishermen up
to 80 percent of the fish that they hook.
Fishing hook sharpeners, such as
the one on Berkley’s Outdoorsman line
stripper, are capable of honing hooks
razor sharp.
It takes a razor-sharp hook for satis-
factory penetration into a big fish’s jaw.
