Fifty-Seventh Year
New Year Babe
Father Time Came
From Early Greece
The personifications of Father
Time and the New Year Babe are
as familiar as those of Santa
Claus or Uncle Sam Yet these
fitting symbols for the end of
one cycle of living and the birth
of another have their roots in
Greek mythology
Father Time comes down to us
as a descendeant of the Greek
god Cronus lord of the universe
Cronus bore the lines of inesti-
mable years on his face and he
carried a scythe but like many
of mythology's earthy gods he
was not altogether admirable
Having been warned that one of
his children would dispose of him
Cronus decided to give none a
chance and got into the habit of
swallowing them at birth His
wife Rhea in an attempt to dis-
coirage the practice hid their
son Zeus after his birth and pre-'
vented Cronus with a stone wrap-
pd in swaddling clothes
The ruse worked Cronus dis-
gorged not only the stone but
the previous children he had
swallowed Zeus later dethroned
his father settled on Mount
Olympus and ruled as chief god
of the Greek pantheon
ater Cronus' name was con-
fused with the word "cronos"
meaning "time" But the hour-
g!as has found a permanent
place in the hand of the white-
Ii air ed gentleman with the
scythe
The New Year Babe may be
as old as Father Tinie During
ancient Greece's festival of Di-
onysus a baby was paraded as
a symbol of rebirth A chief
ceremonial in the Eleusinian
Mysteries featured the image of
a child
In more recent times farmers
of western Prussia staged the
symLolie birth of a on har-
vest fields A German folk song
of the I Rh century depicts the
Now Year Babe in its present

Youthful Bandit
Captured In Act
A sullen 15-year-old Choctaw
boy was captured minutes after
breaking into Clar Mar's of Jones
Saturday night
The youth was identified as
King Cray of Choctaw
Jack Ledinski and Reese Mob-
ley of Jones were driving past
the store when they saw someone
moving about inside the building
Upon investigating they found
the trout door glass broken At
about the same time they saw
three other youths run from the
Frederick Mercantile store They
made good their escape
The fire siren was sounded by
Ledinski and many citizens con-
verged on the scene
Clarence Mulhausen owner of
Clar Mar's was notified and
upon his arrival entered the
store and pulled the youth from
his hiding place in a show case
in the rear of the room
Although the front door glass
was broken at the Frederick
store the robbers were scared
away before they could enter
Highway patrolmen and deputy
sheriff's came and took the cap-
tured boy to the county jail
A juvenile officer was quoted
by Mulhausen as saying "We'll
have to kiss the boy and turn
him loose because of our juvenile
laws"
Middle age is the period of
life when you will do anything'
to feel better except give up
what's hurting you

found abandoned in a clump of
brush in Pottawatomle county
This car was traced to West of-
