Former U.S. House Speaker Carl Albert
loved to tell people in Washington he came
from Bugtussle just to see their reaction. The
humble U.S. representative who rose to the
highest office ever held by an Oklahoman re-
membered where he came from with humor.
"I asked him one time where the name Bug-
tussle came from," said his childhood friend
Julian Rothbaum. "He said that during the
Depression, times were so hard, that even the
bugs had to tussle to make a living."
In his hometown of Bugtussle, a tiny com-
munity tucked away near McAlester in Pitts-
burg County, Albert is remembered as a gener-

Conner
Susan Lyn Conner, 50, of Orlando, Fla.,
died Jan. 30, 2000. Memorial services are set
for 1 l a.m. Wednesday at the Central Christ-
ian Church at Mangum with the Kev. Ron Dav-
enport officiating. Stewart Funeral Service is
in charge of arrangements.
Conner was born Nov. 12, 1949, in Balti-
more, Md., the daughter of Joe W. and Othello
Garner Sweet. She attended many different
schools including Berlin and Frankfurt, Ger-
many.
She spent 23 years in Oklahoma City. She
was a registered nurse.
Conner was preceded in death by her grand-
parents, Joe and Lessie Garner and Lewis and
Viola Sweet as well as one aunt, Peggy Meyer.
Survivors include: her mother, Othello
Sweet of Mangum: two daughters, Kerensa
Conner and Megan Cole, both of Norman: two
sisters. Sherri Beson of Oklahoma City and
Lori Eckersall of Arieba; one brother, James
Sweet of Mangum and one granddaughter,
Scarlett Cole of Norman.
Waller
Billy Don Waller, Sr., 36, died unexpectedly
Friday, Feb. 4. 2000, at Mangum City Hospi-
tal. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today
at Greer Funeral Home Chapel in Mangum.
Officiating was the Rev. John Robles. inter-
ment was at Roselawn Cemetery under the di-
rection of Greer Funeral Home.
Waller was born March 4, 1964, in Altus, to
Albert Lee and Edna Miller Waller. He worked
in construction and was a crane operator.
In 1980, he moved to Mangum from Alaba-
ma, where he had lived for two years. He was
affiliated with the Baptist church.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include: his mother, Edna Waller
of Oxford, Wis.; his wife, Joann Mills Waller
and two sons, Billy Don Waller, Jr. and Kevin
Waller, all of Mangum; three brothers, Albert
Waller, Lubbock, Texas, Robert Waller, Moni-
tel, Wis. and Grady Waller, Hollis.
Community First Aid and Safety

Southwest Oklahoma Chapter of
the American Red Cross on Feb.
