By Phillip Alder
This column was written three
days after the dreadful accident
in which Princess Diana died.
She admitted to knowing the
basics of bridge, but I don't think
any record exists of a deal she
played. Edward VII was an avid
player, but no member of the
present Royal Family plays,
though they all enjoy racing de-
mon. The Queen plays six-pack
bezique and complicated games
of solitaire (patience, as they are
called in Britain).
As a tribute to Princess Diana,
here is a deal in which the key
play is made by the queen of
hearts. It is taken from "Right
Through the Pack" by Robert
Darvas and Norman de Villiers
Hart (republished by Baron
Barclay, 1996).
Some strange bidding left South
in five clubs (but bear in mind
that the book was first published
in 1948). Witli two minor-suit

aces to lose, declarer had to
avoid a second trump loser.
After winning the first trick
with dummy's heart king, de-
clarer crossed to hand with a
spade, then ran the club knave
to East's ace. What now?
If West had led a singleton.
East could deliver an immedi-
ate ruff. But what if West had
started witli two hearts? Then
returning a heart away from the
queen didn't look quite so at-
tractive. East was uncertain.
So, the story goes, the queen of
hearts came to the rescue, leap-
ing from East’s hand and falling
face-upward onto the table.
