How to Buy and Care for the
ash-II-Wear Type Clothing
By Dorothy Roe
Associated Press Women's
What with all the new miracle
fabrics on the market each with a
different talent the average con-
sumer Is hopelessly confused
What does it mean when a gar-
ment is tagged "Wash and
Wear?" What does it mean when
It says "Drip Dry?" And what is
the difference when it's tagged
"Automatic Wash and -Wear?"
Nowadays if she listens to all
the advertising claims a customer
may reasonably expect that the
new dress she buys will wear for-
ever never get soiled or wrinkled
or if it does will go and wash it-
self When a so-called "drip dry"
or "wash and wear" garment
fails to live up to its billing the
average woman is likely to become
disillusioned about all modern mir-
acles in clothing
Actually the failure usually hap-
pens because she didn't read the
tag carefully didn't follow wash-
ing directions or- wasn't particular
enough in examining the fabric
when she bought the garment
So how can you be sure you'll
seatJ what you're promised when
yobt buy a garment labeled "wash-
' and-wear?"
i First you must understand the
difference between "wash- and -
wear" and "automatic wash and-

tag Is added it means that the

garment can be put through the

temperature of around 150 degrees
Most late model dryers have the

If a garment is labeled "drip

be washed by hand and hung up
dripping wet When it dries it
should require little or no ironing
If you have smoothed the seams
and collar with your fingers while
it is still wet
To be sure that the garment will
give the performance you expect
It is well to examine the fiber con-
tent of the fabric Clothes which
can be washed by machine and
worn without ironing should have a
high percentage of either dacron

LANE faced head on Into a
blinding sandstorm for a couple
of minutes trying to fight his
horse toward the herd and then
a driving rain struck him He
got the horse to stand still and
dismounted to put On his slicker
the mustang turning tail to the
wind and at this moment a flash
of lightning showed Lane three
riders who weren't on the Four-
Arrow payroll
They were close and had evi-
dently come up from the road
Lane didn't have time to wonder
about their Individual identities
but he knew they were enemiea
Their actions proved it
A streak of gunflame shot out
and Lane felt the hot spin of a
slug near his jaw He flung him-
self back from his horse drop-
ping his slicker and pulled his
pistol A crash of thunder rever-
berated across the heavens di-
rectly overhead More streaks of
gunilame shone there in the rain
Lane returned Cie fire
' When the next bolt of light-
ning came Lane was looking at a
rearing house' The saddle was
empty and heavily ornamented
with silver — Joaquin Verdugo's
kak! The other men then were
Corday and Rudnick and they
had shot to kill because they
thought Lane had recognized
theili and they had btsen bent on
evil They meant to stampede
Lane's herd Filled with a desire
to empty two more saddles Lane
stood braced against the rain
His own horse was walking
away now headed for the shelter
of the bosque Trotting forward
Lane caught the cold-jawed
brute and swung astride him
Lane reloaded his gun rain
streaming from his hands and
spurred toward the place he had
seen gunpowder blaze
He tried to locate the spot

their grills Small table grills originally inspired by the Japanese
hibachi are increasingly popular These adaptable outdoor bar-
becue gadgets can be carried inside to finish the cooking If rain
'falls
Actually you can make your own table grill with flowerpots
I Line each pot with foil 1111 the bottom with sand and place
charcoal briquets over the sand When the fire Is burning well
!place hardware cloth (firm wire mesh) on top for the grill plate
I Always use a large asbestos pad under any table grill
In Spain much' cooking is done with charcoal over units no
larger than this Slow cooking of the charcoal fire helps to give
I food tenderness and flavor Meat sauteed in olive oil over very low
'heat can be cut with a fork The Spanish cooks explain that olive
oil has a lower boiling point and quickly sears the meat even over
low heat preventing the meat from being grease soaked
Gypsy Lamb Stew (Makes about 0 servings)
Have 2 or 3 pounds boneless lamb fromshoulder cut into 1-inch

oil Add 3 cups water and 3 chicken bouillon cubes I tablespoon
minced parsley and I Jar roasted sweet red peppers which have
been drained and cut into large pieces Cook uncovered until all
liquid is absorbed and rice is fluffy this may take about I hour

where Ver dug o's horse had
reared but found no evidence
that he had brought Verdugo
down
Soaking wet with the roar and
crash of the storm in his can and
the weight of it thrusting against
his body Lane headed for the
place where he had dropped his
slicker Before he could pick up
the garment he heard a sound
that chilled his blood
The whole summer's work was
wasted or most of it The herd
was running the pounding hoofs
and clacking horns loud in the
lull between peals of thunder
LANE'S horse almost jumped
out from under him and he
found himself tearing along with
four other riders Getting his
mount under control and realiz-
ing there was still a chance to
put the herd into a mill he
yelled "Turn them Use your
guns" He swung over against
the lead steers the explosion of
his 44 sounding with the guns of
his crew as all tried to swing the
panicked critters toward the
west The lead steers swerved
Balls of lightning were playing
on the tips of their horns The
same thing happened to the ears
of Lane's horse The hands were
all yelling now and some were
hitting at the steers with doubled
ropes It looked as though the
herd would mill but the mad-
Adened beefs made one circle and
the Four-Arrow hands were un-
able to hold the leaders The
head steers cut northeast and
then lined out straight for the
lcreek Lane groaned
He would lose some of them
now Some would brain them-
selves against the trees or break
legs and have to be shot
Swinging wide of the herd
Lane kept jerking his reins until
he'd brought his horse to a weav-
ing stop and yelled for the men
to quit the herd He wanted them
cus the dirt while the oil lubri-
cates and polishes the wood" she

to keep out of the timber None
heard him Ws voice filled no
oars but his own because the
longhorns ran full-tilt into the
underbrush smashing dawn sap-
lings and sounding as though
they were uprooting half the tim-
ber in the bottom It was a sick-
ening sound to Lane
He reined up the creek two
riders looming beside him and
found a solid place to cross over
emerging a few minutes later on-
to the gullied rolling land to the
east
THE longhorns had :plit up af-
ter smashing through the bosque
and were running every which
way
Lane shouted at the men near-
by "Pick up a bunch and stay
with them" and when the range
brightened again with lightning
he himself lined out after a
bunch of about 200 head
It took him an hour to run the
critters down and get them into
a mill It took him twice that
long to chouse them back across
the creek and onto the fiats
where he f ound Four-Arrow
hands holding a gather of about
two thirds of the herd Cutting
his bunch in with these cattle
Lane rode back to help bring up
other bunches as riders appeared
with them
When there was daylight Lane
and Webster rode through the
gather finding many of the steers
with broken and dangling horns
None was crippled None would
have to be destroyed Lane told
the dark- complexioned man
"We'll bring back a saw and do
some dehorning"
They found no steers with
broken legs or necks and none
of the Four-Arrow hands had re-
ceived injury during the brush
popping Lane was relieved
Nineteen of the critters had
bogged down and hands were
busy with ropes and saddle horns
snaking them out The creek was
rising Lane said to Webster
"We'd better help them Ken be-
fore some of them drown"
Lane ordered two vaqueros to
Iloose-herd the beet "Stay with
them while the rest of us go eat"

FOR TV VIEWERS
FOR HUSBANDS ONLY
The newest series of Bell System science shows will be
televised on NBC-TV Thursday October 23 7 to 8 pm
(CST) "Gateways to the Mind" deals with human senses
011 It is an amazing story of what scientists have learned
about the human senses For example I have always
thought there were five senses but through a skillful blend-
ing of "live" action explanatory animation and unusual doc-
umentary film scientists demonstrate that there are tat least
fourteen of these senses
I am looking forward to viewing this show and I advise
you not to miss it In your area this program will be carried
on KV00-TV Tulsa Channel 2 and WKY-TV Oklahoma
City Channel 4
I suspect some wives will sneak a peek at this simply
because it says "For Husbands Only" But just this once
I'd like to have a man-to-min talk with all husbands
About this time of year — halfway between summer
vacations and Christmas — things settle down and your wife
is probably doing a bit of dreaming Maybe it's that trip
you've aways planned to take or a new house or even a
sports car
Dreaming's fine but it usually takes a lot of years to
make a big dream come true However little dreams take
less time In fact just a minute or two
So here's my hint for husbands: Order an extension
phone in color for the bedroom I'll guarantee that it will
perk up your wife's morale like a new hairdo or a new hat
Even better it will make a hero out of you
Just call the telephone business office today A service
representative will help you pick the right color
IT'S REAL FAMILY FUN
Sunday is a real family day
Many of us have our families around us and we spend
the day going to Church relaxing chatting just doing things
together
However some people have members of their families
living sway from home — either away at college or married
sorts or daughters living in another part of the country
There's really no reason to leave them out of the happy
Sunday get-togethers Just pick up the telephone and make
a long distance call That way Sunday is fun for everyone
in the family
Why not this Sunday? You'll surprise the "out-of-towners"
and have a lot of fun on yourend of the line too
