LOOSE HOUSING
:-1 FOR 111111101
STILLWATER — Dairy herds
held in by bad weather this win-
ter are more comfortable have
greater freedom and are easier
to care for in a "loose housing"
type barn says Dr Stanley Mus-
grave Oklahoma A&M college
dairy production specialist
"Loose housing reterS to at
least a solid three sided shed
with an open barn yard area ad-
joining" '
This loose housing requires ad-
ditional bedding over the earth
floor Fewer cattle bruises and
an increased value in manure are
two strongpoints of the system
Reughages are easier to feed and
ventilation problems are avoided
"Straw is the best 'bedding ma-
terial when applied lour or six
inches deep Wood) shavings or
hay left in the manger are other
possible bed4ngs The manure is
left in the barn covered with
straw Not only is the manure of
a higher quality as a natural ler- 1
tilizer but it acts as a source of i
heat during cold spells" Mus- I
grave suggests
While it does require more bed-
ding the hay cost is off-set by
less labor in keeping the barn I
clean
"Each cow requires a bedded
sleeping area of 60 to 70 square
feet A paved lot necessary only
if mud is a problem requires at
least 100 square feet per animal
Bunker space in either instance
should allow each cow 30 square
feet
"A cement base around the
feed bunks makes this area easy
to clean Frequent cleaning of
this space allows the cow to be
more comfortable while eating
"Grade A requirements prohib-
it milking cows in the bedded
area" Musgrave reminds
All work and no play may make
Jack a dull bpy but going to
school without brolakfast may
make him duller still Nutrition-
ists and safety experts have also
found that workers ' who skip
breakfast are more apt to suffer
accidents
