SENSITIVE RECORDER
CAN HEAR MOLECULE
STOCKHOLM (p) - The Un-
easiness of molecules can be lis-
tened to in a "wire-grammophone"
constructed by an elec-
tric firm in Norrkoeping Sweden
The apparatus which was built
by the Norwegian-ban engineer
N Oeiaas was shown for the
first time in a radio exhibition
The purpose of the "wire-
grammophone" however is not
to listen to the grumbling mole-
cules but to record and repro-
duce music and speech rie
sounds are recorded on a piano-
wire which can absorb two hours
of music or four hours of speech
through magnetic influences
A magnet in the neighborhood
of the wire roll causes the mole-
cules to turn with a crashing
sound

Church Led Social
Life in Old Days
Thesis Discloses
-
NORMAN— Early Oklahomans
had a wonderful time without
disc jockeys midget auto races
bridge jitterbug dances and oth-
er types of 1947 recreation
Their lives demanded bard
work most of the time but when
they did get together everyone
really enjoyed himself it is re-
ported by Mrs Martha Calvert
Evans graduate student at the
University of Oklahoma in her
master's thesis -
No '4Jpper Crust"
The "upper crust" was ' un-
known in small communities
"The bank president: doctor
lawyer clergyman and merchant
were all on an equal plane" she
stated becausa "social life was
based on a general foundation of
comradeship"
In most towns the church was
the center of social activity Here
the rich and poor educated and
uneducated cultured and the un-
cultured came together on a basis
of absolute equality and "com-
muned as citizens and friends"
she stated
People came to church long
before the hour for worship and
remained long afterwards to vis-
it The general store was always
a popular gathering place to see
one's friends and get the news
Many get-togethers were held in
pioneer homes
Work Pleasure Combined -
Popular forms of recreation in-
cluded basket picnics fish frys
candy-pullings square dances
box suppers barbecues spelling
bees quiltings and meetings of
literary societies
Quite often the early settlers
combined work with pleasure at
such events as log-rollings and
house-raisings
By 1907 the pattern of society
In the Indian Territory had
changed Mrs Evans found As
towns grew larger a town social
life distinct from that of the
country had developed
