EY WILLIAM E GILROY D D
THE wok' "standards" has at
least two meanings - -
In the one sense it refers to an
ideal of perfection or correctness
by which all other things in the
same class are measured or tested
It is in this sense and for this
purpose that our government has
established a Bureau of Standards'
and that Greenwich in Britain
established a center for the meas-
uring of time and longitude
In the other sense the standard
has been the flag or banner underl
which men fought in battle to be I
defended with all the- courage
and the very lives of the brave
When we speak of Christian
standards we may be sure that
there is reference to both these
meanings Jesus said: "Be ye per-
fect -even as your Father which
is in heaven is perfect" Paul set
up Love as the test of the perfect
life Everywhere through the Bible
in the Old Testament and in the
New the marks and qualities—
the standards—of the good life ore
set forth
Similarly though the references
are not many in Scripture they
are specific to banners or ensigns
as standards or rallying symbols
of loyalty to God His leaderships
and commands The Psalmist
(Psalm 60:4) represents God as
giving a banner to them that fear
Him "that it may be displayed
because of the truth" And there
are various references as in Isaiah
5: 26 to "an ensign to the nations"
and in Isaiah II: 10 to'"an ensign
of the people"
True ètadards of conduct
therefore fad not alone for the

individual they are social for
the people and for the nations
How greatly today we need these
ancient conceptions so empha-
sized by the Hebrew prophets in
the heroic age of Israel! How dif-
ferent history might have been
if that prophetic ideal of one
world established in peace and
brotherhood and righteousness
had become a reality! Yet how
sadly the world even today is
neglecting the prophetic factors
without which that "one world"
can never be realized "Let judg-
ment run down as waters and
righteousness as a mighty stream"
(Amos 5:24) (
C AN anything less purge the
world of its evils its violence
and its hates? And social world-
wide and international as this
rightegusness Must be it must
have its source an rise in indi-
vidual lives So standards of
Christian conduct must be the es-
sential foundation of a new and
better world
- Nor are 'Christian" standards
to be thought of as opposed to
anything of good that any other
religion has taught The standards
of conduct that Christianity em-
phasizes are not arbitraryor ar-
tificial They are inherent in the
basic condition 4)f good life among
men --honesty sincerity justice
mercy and all the things to ac-
