Croon Fruit Not Cave
of Your Stomach Pains
Do you believe that eating green
fruit causes tummy-ache? Do ycu
imagine that an !ostrich when
frightened buries' his head In the
sane Woltid you ray that one mat
feed a 'cold and starve a fever—or
that beef tea is nourishing? '
If you do declaies a writer in
London Answers Magazine you're
wrong
It's swallowing fruit in chunks
that causes pain and there's actual-
ly less nourishment in six - large
cupfuls of beel-tas than in one slice
of bread '
As for feeding colds—the familiar
saying is a misquotation of the fal-
mous Dr Abesnetht who declared:
"If you' feed a cold you shall have
to starve a fever" meaning that
stuffing a person laid up with a cold
would soon bring on a fever
Then there's the ideu that cats
see better in the dark Actually the
time When cats see at their best is
twilight 'because their pupils ex-
pand far more than ours and are
sensitive to the ultra-violet rays of
the spectrum But after dark
they're just as blind as we are
If you think your heart is on the
left side you're entertahiing anoth-
er fallacy It happens to be neither
left nor right but almost in the
middle
Shaving doesn't make hair grow
faster Experts hnve measured un-
der a microscope the length or hair
that grows day by day between
shaves and have compared this
rate with the daily prowth in people
who don't shave The average is
exactly the same
"Fenianism" 5-httme of
Irkh IrishAmericans
"Fonianism" ka3 a movement of
Irish and Irish-Americans to sepa-
rate Ireland from Great Britain and
form it into an independebt repub-
lic The first of the Fenian lead-
ers James Stephens failing to cre-
ate an uprising in Munster came to
the United States to form a union
of Irish who had left their country
following the famine of 1841 and
with John O'Mahoney organized
the movement on this side of the At
'antic
After the close of the Civil war
which cast thousands of Irishmen
adrift notes a writer in the Indi-
anapolis News Fenian societiesso-named
from a Gaelic title—were
formed rapidly in many cities in
the United States and an invasion
of Canada known as the "Fenian
raid" was planned and partially
carried out in 1858 Between 500
and 600 men crossed the Niagara
river on June 1 but were driven
back many of them being arrested
by the United States authorities
Other attempts which were made
during the year were checked be-
fore the men 'could leave the Ameri-
can side of the boundary line On
May 25 1870 however a small Fe
Man force crossed the frontier at
Trout river in the province of Que
bee only to be driven back by Ca
radian volunteers Effective meas-
ures later were taken to quell the
activities of the Fenians because of
the accompanying threat to American-British
relations and the move-
ment passed into obscurity
Elates Rotation Governs
Days Years No Time Lest
Time regarding days years etc
has not been lost in any way and
the earth's rotation determines day
and night Just as the earth's rev-
olution around the sun determines
the seasons observes a writer in
the Detroit News
The division of the year into
months and days by what we call
a calendar has been a matter of
growth and change The Roman
calendar introduced in 738 B C
had a year of 10 months or 304
days but as this did not agree with
the solar year of 365 days two
'months were added by Numa Rom-
pilius in 713 B C and the year
was made to start at the winter
solstice As this calendar was not
based on a knowledge of the true
length of the year (36524224 days)
the error accumulated so that by
Julius Caesar's time the seasons
were confused and spring cattle
about the first of January The
Julian calendar "was then estab-
lished with the leap year to cor-
rect this-and the year 40 a C was
given 445 days called "the year of
confusion" Sixteen centuries later
the error from the Julian calendar
was found to be 10 days our pres-
ent calendar the Gregnrian was
devised to correct this
