The South African crisis is
none the less real for the fact that
until very recently It has been lit-
tle known Development of Free
State gold dep5isits extension and
diversification of manufacturing
and a period of unprecedented
economic growth for which the
plans have long been completed
all are forestalled by a labor
shortage of staggering proportions
THE l'etoria government ap-
parently desires and can aceom-
modate alitiost an unlimited num-
ber or immigrants It needs work-
ers of virtually every category
and degree of skill It needs them
so immediately that it is prepar-
ing a series of handbooks in many
languages to be given the widest
possible distribution in an effort
to interest people all over the
world in the opportunities South
Africa has to offer
"The shortage of manpower is
becoming increasingly insistent
and obtrusive" said Field Mar-
shal Jan C Smuts recently And
he added that "every kind of good
and useful immigrant would be
welcome" and that "we want good
Europeans We can get hundreds
of tho'usands millions of them"
While Jewish refugees look in
vain for a: home then the Union
of South Africa looks in vain for
I mmigrants The two problems1
considered as a unit could read-
ily he solved
SOUTH AFRICA hag what per-
haps no other nation on earth has
at Present—a labor shortage and
the resourees necessary to sup-
port the immigrants who can re-
lieve that shortage It can there-
fore afford the Jewish refugees
the genuine opport unity they
seek
The Jewish refugees on the
other hand have something
equally Valuable to offer South
Africa They constituteia band
of migrants both Pager and desir-
able They are industrious In WI-
ligent energetic—and they are
avaliable in tremendous uninbers
Why does not South Africa ex-
tend its immigration invitation
specifically to the Jewish refugees
—and in so doing convert mut-
ual need into mutual opportunity?
