ALL this while I had not seen
Annabelle except at a distance
One hot July morning When Flora
came running up Our steps she
was obviously bursting With im-
portant news It was Annabelle
he got out Annabelle was going
to be married that very night to
a man none of them had ever seen
Armabelle herself had never laid
eyes on him till yesterday He was
a widower with four children a
graduate of Harvard Annabelle
claimed he was very well off It
had all been arranged a month or
six weeks ago but Annabelle
never said a single word about
him until this morning
"But I thought you said she met
him just yesterday" I exclaimed
"I did she did But she and
this Frank have been correspond-
ing for a long time Some travel-
ing man told Sister about Frank
and that he was terribly lonely
but terribly shy and the children
running wild and needing a mother
and looking after And then he
went back and told Frank he had
met just the girl for him He even
had a snapshot of Sister And
then Frank sent Sister a Laic) note
and Sister answered and Frank
sent back his picture and a picture
of his house—it's a very nice house
—and his children and they went
on writing and finally -:hey ar-
ranged for Frank to come on and
see Sister and if they liked each
other to get married immediately
And today is the day He's in Bing-
hamton at the moment on business
Imagine thinking of business on
his wedding day! He's coming here
at four o'clock"
"What does he look like?" I
finally got in
'Well his picture—it's in a fam-
ily group—is sort of blurred He's
tall and has a lot of hair and the
children are darlings all boys The
youngest is five snd the oldest
thirteen What do you suppose
Sister will do with four lively

"Flora dear this Frank may be

about him? Does she seem pleased?
Happy? Excited?"
Flora shook her head

Sister said: 'Please no tears This
is an excellent arrangement I'm
making' Then she took Os up-
stairs and showed us her trous-
seau and told me just what he
wanted for her wedding—no sup-
per Just sandwiches and cham-
pagne But I'm having chicken
and sweetbread salad and a wed-
ding cake It would be heathenish
to be married without a wedding
cake "
flora' and I spent a busy day
and flora soon cheered up as the
always did when she was having
a party
I
GOT home at five o'clock too
excited to be tired Suddenly I
remembered that I had no wed—
ding present for Annabelle Well
we could send something later
Father had gone to call on the
bridegroom and I could hardly
wait for him to get home I was
on the front porch and Le bt at
the screen door as Father climbed
the steps
"Wbars he like" I called out
"I' swear I don't know" Tether
said dropping heavily into a porch
chair The man's a gentleman
I should say about 40 not bad-
looking but there's something
about him I don't like His eyes
are too close together and his lips
are too red On the other hand

and Nelson with all sorts of
bankers' references the name of
his family clergyman and a list
of bis clubs Of course they won't
have time to investigate them but
they think and I think that Mr
Hartwell spoke the absolute truth
and that all in all Annabelle is
