April was designated by proc-
lamation as "Plan Your Vacation
in Oklahoma Month" and I hope
that many such plans were made
----oecause no wthat June is here
the vacation season is upon us and
Oklahoma offers -vacationists a
greater variety of recreational fa-
cflities than ever before
now ranks second
in the area of its
and when our cur-
of lake development
Oklahoma will rank
Our state now ranks second
among the 48 in the area of its
inland waters and when our cur-
rent program of lake development
is completed Oklahoma will rank
first
Thousand of Oklahomans and
out-of-state visitors will swim in
Okiahomas lakes this summer
Figures submitted to me by the
Anlerican Red Cross disclose that
of 80000000 Americans who "go
swimming" each year only 10 per
cent can swim well 40 per cent
can swim only a little and 50 per
cent cannot swim at all!
These figures tell an astounding
stoty They also have consider
water education The Red Cross
advises that the best way to in-
sure safety in the water is to en-
rol in aswimming course Grad-
uated courses from :beginner to
swimmer and junior and senior
life saver are available through
Red Cross chapters
A great deal of good work in
this direction was done in Okla-
homa last year During 1917 our
state ranked seventh in the num-
ber of swimming certificates won
through completion of accredited
courses of instrpction On the
basis of our population as com-
pared to the population of other
states Oldahma ranked sixth
This is a good record but it is
still lagging behind our program
of lake development If we are to
be first in area of inland waters
we should be first in development
of our swimmers
