EPISTLE TO PHILEMON f prn E:t rev!val meetings to begin Sun - First Christian Churl
Text: Philemon 4-20
The International rniform llun-
day School Lesson for Nov 29
Paul's Letter to Philemon Phile-
mon 4-20
1119AilL'S letter to Philemon is one
-IL of the prison epistles It was
written during his imprisonment at
Rome It is notable as the shortest
of Paul's epistles This single-chap tered epistle however is notable for
the way in which Paul deals with
a problem of personal character and
the institution of slavery
Paul has taught that the grace
of God through the Gospel was
available for slave and master alike
Very quickly apparently the tri-
umphs of the Gospel were manifest
In both free men and slaves
It should perhaps be remem-
bered that until comparatively mod-
ern times the great mass of man-
kind have been under slavery or
serfdom Free citizens constituted
a very small group in ancient so-
ciety In the Greek and Roman
world slaves were frequently men
of marked ability and training The
slave might serve his master as a
skillful physician or In some other
eally high and trusted capacity
Though the slave lacked the free-
(low that would give him power
over the disposal of his own life
he wu r often accorded the privileges
that made him a man of learning
It was not unnatural therefore
that the new religion should find
among its disciples slaves as well
as masters The problems of the
new relWon of brotherly love were
acute in a situation where both the
slave and the master became Chris-
tian disciples Under these dream-
stanees we find Paul dealing with
this practical situation in a pray-
tie:II way
The spirit of Christ's touching is
inlicrently thoroughly opposed to
the institution of slavery )tut it
woidd have beet hopeless in that
day to have made any direct attack
rpor the institution of slavery It
With deeply entrenched in the whole
raechanism of life and goverhineld
Under these circumstances Paul
taught that both master and slave
orc subject to the law of Christ
man was called to the Christian
hong a slave let him prove
hih!self faithful and honorable in
his environment It a man was
called being a master let hint exer-
cise his mastership with gracious--Ralph

Hess and love esteeming his slave
as a Christian brother
It was one of the difficult situa-
tions arising out of this condition
that Paul dealt with in this epistle
Ouesimus whose name means
"profitable" was a slave belonging
to P101011011 to whom the epistle
was written a Christian of COIOSSe
Onesimus had robbed his master
and fled to Home Here he became
a convert to Christianity through
Paul's preaching and the sincerity
of his new experience was imme-
diately tested when Paul urged him
that it was his duty to go back to
Philemon In sending him back
Paul gave him a letter to Philemon
in which he reminds the latter that
he himself was a slave or prisoner
of Jesus Christ and that as such he
is pleading the case of Onesimus
who is his $on in the faith He
reminds Philemon that he would
have been glad to keep Onesimus
with him that he might have the
benefit of Onesimus service and
help He offers if Onesimus has
done any wrong or is in Philemon's
indebtedness to assume responsi-
bility What did Philemon do? The rec-
ord does not appear Did he as we
might expect send Onesinius back
tc Paul? The letter is one of tender
and beautiful feeling combined with
courteous and persuasive expres-
sion It suggests the contrast be-
t ween goals and realities and is in-
structive for its helpfulness as P

Doctrine of Man's Origin
The Lutheran church strictly ad-
heres to the teaching of the Bible
(Gen 2) that man is not the prod-
uct of an alleged evolution but was
made by God through an act of
direct creation he was given an
immortal soul was originally en-
dowed with perfect holiness and
cleated for eternal life that how-
ever he sinned deprived himself
of a loving communion with God
became wholly depraved and fell
a victim to death with all its dire
and sad consequences and that in
his natural state he cannot by any
powers or strength of his own re-
establish the right relations with
God his Creator
