servations and opinions on

Everyone should feel good
about the Community Fund
finance drive The money for
next year's budget was over-
scribed in short order For all
Practical purposes the job was
done in a single day
Thanks are due too First to
the people of the community
who responded so well to this
request for funds
The drive was Nv e 11 planned
and well organized and
the workers were willing laic
and diligent They all deserve
our thanks
Lester Bond finance chair-
man and lflll Janzen Fund
chairman should get no little
satisfaction from the manner
in which the budget was rais-
ed They are due plenty of
credit for the parts they play-
ed The "Big One" idea is still
the best for our community and
with support like it received
last Thursday it should con-
tinue to fulfill our local needs
for a long time to come
From year to year and
month to month we continue
to be a bit surprised at the
fast pace of the building pro-
gram in our town Home build-
ing continues under a full head
of steam It has taken a bit
longer but the building fever
has hit downtown Recent
months have seen much new
construction remodeling and
face lifting When the busi-
ness section catches up with
the re S ident ini area Av e will
really have something
and the signs am becoming
favorable
What started out to be a
very long football season is
becoming shorter
Local fans had reason to get
braced for a had time when
our Bulldogs and Eagles both
lost their first two games in a
row Since then things have
been looking up
J W Cole's Bulldogs have
W 11 two and tied one in their
last three starts and are in
thi rd place i n the con lerence
st and ings They are playing
thei r last home games on the
next two Saturday nights

I Seen Close Fits
If past history means any-
thing the Southwesi'ern Bull-
dogs face prospects of another
tight fit when they host East-
ern New Mexico university in
Milani stadium here Saturday
night
The history referred to here
has to do with past battles
between the Bulldogs and Grey-
hounds and not necessarily to
those two one-point victories
and one tie that Southwestern
has chalked up in the past
three weeks
The Southwestern - Eastern
New Mexico series has been
marked by close decisions
through the past several years
For exatnple the two clubs
battled to a 14 to 14 tie last
year at Portales
On the basis of season re-
cords to (late the dope favors
the visiting Greyhounds despite
the improved play of J W
Cole's Bulldogs in recent weeks
Southwestern has x'on three
and tied one but those wins
NVVIC by very narrow margins
two one-pointers and another
by four points
The teanm have played one
coninion foe the Central
Ilronchos The Drones scored
three times in the last quar-
ter to beat Eastern New Mex-
ico 20 to I in the season open-
er Some four weeks later the
Bulldogs were jolted by Cen-
tral 25 to 6 with the locals
trailing by two touchdowns all
the way
Carl Richardson successful
Greyhound coach has come up
with another fine running and
passing club at Porta los They
have lost two games one to
Central and the other to Cor-
pus Christi 83 to 20
