Statistics show that ill-
ness today costs the aver-

credit must go to "high-

seems odd but the sig-

Bads News From
Coeds For Towns
Of Under 2500
A survey of the future house-
keeping plans of 319 Oklahoma
State university coeds contains a
shocking bit of information for
small town chambers of com-
merce None of the coeds questioned by
Dr James E Montgomery head
of the department of housing and
:nterior design said they want
their future home located in a
town of less than 2500 popula-
tion This despite the fact that 11
percent of the girls were from
villages and 30 percent from
farms
The remainder of the girls in
the survey—which included repre-
sentativcs of a variety of socio-
economic levels—were from urban
areas of at least 2500
Where do most of the girls
want to live? Dr Montgomery re-
ports that an overwhelming ma-
jority want their future home lo-
cated in the subums of a city of
25-50000
Sixty-six percent of the farm
coeds said they want to live in the
suburbs Seventy-nine percent of
the girls from urban areas under
30000 and 86 percent from areas
larger than 30000 said they want
to live in the suburbs
Only 11 percent of all the girls
said they expect to start house-
keeping in the community where
MAYSVILLE NEWS
their parents live
About an equal number of sen-
iors juniors sophomores and fresh-
men—most of them home econom-
ics majors—were represented in
the survey To Montgomery's dis-
may their taste in houses varied
lemarkably little
Montgomery is distressed be-
cause seniors are leaving college
with housing goals pretty much
unchanged from those sometimes
inadequate ones formulated dur-
ing their pre-college years
If pre-conceived ideas about
hous:ng remain to-lettered by four
years of 'college Montgomery a I
former sociology professor figures
that such ides in other areas pro-
bably aren't being changed either
Montgomery also found that the
wide difference in social and eco-
nomic backgrounds made little
difference in what girls expect in
a house
Eighly-eight percent want their
first house to be under six years
of age arid 50 percent want it
to be under two years of age
Most of the girls want a house
which will cost about $14030—
a price close to the national aver-
age for ney non-latm homes
The girls—most of them from
Oklahoma nnd surrounding states
—turned thumbs do in on colonial
style hon--! -CapeCod French co-
lonial etc About (i0 percent want
a ranch type house or some slight
deviation from the ranch type
Twelve percent want a split level
house
Montgomery says most of the
coeds are surprisingly realistic in
1 their aims- Eighty-three percent
want only two or three bedrooms
It's a face filled with peace and
strength—the face of the Statue
of Liberty
She's a great symbol of one of
the things most worth keeping
But she can only stand for lib-
erty It's up to each of us to help
keep it
And you can help—by helping
to keep the peace
Peace costs money Money for
strength to keep the peace Money

and 83 percent want a maximum
of two bathrooms
Eighty-nine percent said they
want a house with a brick or
stone exterior but about balf of
these admitted they would have to
settle for something else And on- 4
ly about half of 74 percent who
wanted a fireplace figured they I
would get it
About 70 percent of the girls
said they want air condtioning
wall to wall carpeting and a pa-
tio but only about 20 percent
figured they would get a house I
so equipped 1
Where do the girls get their
ideas for a future home? Not
from their parent's home the sur-
vey indicates The girls said other
homes magazines and college
classes all influenced their selec-
tion more than the parental abode
FISHING BANNED AT I

1
The Oklahoma Depart of
Wildlife Conservation has issued
orders to close Lake Watonga to
fishermen until t:e commission of-
:icially declares it open so every-
one will have the same privilege
Some fishermen have tried to pre-
view the fishing in the lake at
Roman Nose State Park so Clar-
ence Burch state wildlife depart-
ment director instructed game
rangers to notify the public and
allow no fishing until further no-
tice 1
Burch said the commission will
meet August 4 at which time it
