This goodwill toward men sea-
son seems appropriate for a brief
discussion of how much Oklahoma
has fared with integration
Throughout much of the world
today our state is pernaps best
known for the fact we have accom-
plished peaceful integration in the
public schools As I view it this
is a fine tribute to the average
Oklahoma citizen
Not all Oklahomans agreed with
the Supreme Courts edict out-
lawing Jim Crow Especially in
"Little Dixie" the tradition of
separate schools had been handed

What's more financing sepa-
1 rato schools is epenske We're
now iiving a million doilars each
year by leming all children go to
the nearest school
I have observel that some of
the bigger taxpdyers regardless
of what may hive been instilled
in them during their formative
years look with kindlier eyes on
integration when tnis fact gets
through to them It may not be
the most valid reason for uphold-
ing the law of the land but it's
a reason understood by all
It's history now but I think it
was a proud day for Oklahoma
back in 1955 when the people
changed the state constitution to
eliminate separate school finan-
cing That they did it by a 3 to
1 vote was a surprise to many
I have often said three people
can start a riot and three people
can prevent one In each case it
just depends upon who those three
people happen to be
A combination of factors have
brought about peaceful school in-
tegration in our state It was
helped tremendously by the fact
key public officials especially in
Oklahoma education circles firm-
ly believed the high courts ruling
should be obeyed
The capitol press corps and in-
dividual newspaper publishers co-
operated by refusing to sensation-
alize any story concerning race
relations The State Crime Bu-
reau quietly remained informed'
and alert to any area where Un-
rest might deve:op
We were blessed with sensible
school boards throughout the state
Almost without ex'ciption
bonrd membors hciped sell
the neW order in their none com-
munities Most importa:-t however has
been the at of the average
man on the street Ile was given
all the facts and demonstrated
Once again I believe that his vis-
dom can be trusted under those
circumstances
It all happened quietly even
casually Some of our success may
have been due to our strong In-
dian background because those
with the blood of the very first
Americars know about intoler-
ance It's t"le some of our citizens
still feel we took the wrong course
But they are sensible enough to
accept the majority's decision
with out ill-feeling
That's democracy
This series of questions and an-
swers on highway safety is intend-
ed to give information on good
driving practices familiarize you
with Oklahoma's traffic laws
Please direct any questions to
your local patrol troopers in care
of this paper
QUESTIONS
I Is a driver's reaction time al-
ways the same?
2 What are some of the con-
ditions which affect reaction time?
3 how can a driver tell easily
what clear distance ahead he
needs at the speed as which he
happens to be traveling?
