MIDGE VS AN MG
TAD WARNER stood hand in
hand with Midge staring
through the plate glass window
at the one sports car Elkton
boasted A fast sleek little MG
that he drean:ed was his own
Midge pulled away impatiently
"If you loved me as much as you
did that Ferrari you'd fInd a job"
Her challenge recalled him to
his troubles "MG' he corrected
-Fiats are my favorites but It's
you I love Midge Who ever
hcard of a car with blueberry
eyes or wheat-colored hair? And
your lines would defeat any de-
signer -Oh Tad!" Midge cried but he
could tell she liked it "If only
youd take that Job in the depart-
mont store
"I'd hate it even though I would
be making money But when
Tad held Midge in his arms he
knew there could be no more de-
tay A trick knee kept him out of
Army but only his pride kept
hen from the department store
job Money would mean mar-
riage and that's what they both
w nteci
Tad walked Into the barn he'd
converted into a home half an hour
later barely noticing his old ja-
lopy Ready for bed he strode
restlessly thinking of his two pas-
sions—Midge and sports cars he
had magazines devoted to pie-
'tires of every known make piled
ugh on the floor and framed pic-
tures of n Jaguar Simca Fiat and
n MG 0
Promptly at nine the following
morning Tad entered the store—
the hobby shop not the department
store—in search of a job His
h1r: rank as he glanced at the
dark lriterior jammed with box-
es and models in wildest disorder
"Good morning" he spoke to
the thin white-haired man who
appeared at the sound of a bell
"I know' guile a bit about model
cars sod well I'm look-
ing !or a job"

The old man laughed soundLtss-
ly "Here?"
Definitely" Tad sounded far
more assured than he felt
The old man laughed again but
his eyes measured Tad "Give me
five reasons why you'd be valu-
able to the shop"
Tad looked around thoughts
racing "I'd clean this place out
so people could walk through with
out hitting things set a model
train up on a table and 'seep it
running when customers were in
the shop make those windows so
attractive boys would come on in
and I'd have a certain time e 101
week to help kiis Wili) tir mod
el trains and cars
"Tl-ats Only four
"Well if I were l'Unntril it I'd
put in a magazine rack and sub-
cribe to the better hobby maga-
zines like the sports car ones
Then I'd let anybody look at them
but I'd be willing to take sub-
scriptions too
"That's six the old man stuck
out an arthritic hand "I‘ly name's
John Thatnel You think your
ideas would bring more money
into the shop?"
"Yes" Tad held his breath
"All right prove it in a month
and I'll put you on a starting sal-
ary of $200 plus commissions on
electric trains and toels rut
you've got to handle the work
"I'll try and keep you busy Mr
Thotnel" Tad promised "Okay if
I go right to work?"
By the time Tad met Midge that
night he was bone-tired but con-
fident "It's the future I like" he
explained "It I bring customers
Into the shop—and I will—I'm will-
ing to bet Thotnel will let me buy
in later"
"There won't be any MG on that
'kind of money" Midge warned
"When I'm running the shop rn
be paying for little Midges and
Tads not a sports car" Tad
laughed finding confirmation in
Midge's blueberry eyea
