"ROYAL THIEVERY"
Discussing the penalties imposed on the pocketbooks
of the people by inflation John S Knight editor of the
Chicago Daily News shows that:
It robs the worker of his pension security
- It robs the man who has invested in government secur-
ities as part of his savings
It robs the dependents of eterans echo (kpeed in
insurance
It robs widows and children 4f all people who have
tried to provide for their families I tirtingh insurance
It makes Social Security a laud
It cuts down the amount of goods that can be pur-
chased by the growing army of old people
And finally Mr Knight declares it robs everyone who
is dependent upon a fiyed income from investments
In the face of this our senators and representatives
go merrily on deflating the bdlar by federal extravavance
and waste—the process has been aceurately termed "Royal
Thievery"
A SORRY EXAMPLE
A I7-year-old school Loy who attended the Youth
Festival in Moecolx along with 10 other Americans has
returned to his home in Portland Oregon According to
news reports he said the only reason he dhin't make the
trip to Red China was because he didn't have enough
money and that he ranted to be home xvhen school opened
Apparently the government Lan on trips to Red China had
no effect on his decision to return—"If I wanted to go
I'd go" he is quoted as saying
Those who went to Red China from Russia in defiance
of the government ban showed their contempt for author-
ity If any of them get in trouhle in China they 101 be the
first to cry for protection from the g-overnment which they
defied
Are these young people who thumb their noses at
authority a result of failure in home training and our edu-
cational system to teach respect for 1tv and order?

Farm Values
Show Increase
8 Percent Gain
Noted By Agency
WASHINGTON — The market
value of the nation' farms jumped
8 percent to a new records high
of $112400000000 in the year end-
ed July 1 the Agriculture Depart-
ment reported today
The value was expected to be
even greater for the late summer
and early Ian monthsthe depatit
ment added in a farm real estate
report
The 8 percent climb was the lar-
gest annual increase since the
year ended in mid-I951 Farm val-
ues increased by 2 percent o r
more in 47 states with the sharp-
est advances — averaging 12 per
cent—reported in the Southeast
Farm land and building values
Increased by 3 percent between
last March I and July 1 the re-
port noted This brought the July
I index of value per acre to 151
percent of the 1947-49 average
The report said the strength in
farm values was due to:
General favorable crop prospects
as of mid-1957
Pressures to enlarge existing
farms
Increased demand for poor-quality
land in some areas Farmers
and non-farmers want such land to
"deposit" in the soil bank conser-
