STATE HOUSES AT
DARLINGTON DESERTED
—
Investment in BM !dines and Land for
old Home is $250000
' The extensive group of buildings
of the old Darlington hospital con-
stituting a village within themselves
and representing a state investment
of approximately $250000 are swift-
ly falling to decay since they were
abandoned by the state a year ago
The sanitarium was purchased by
the state several years ago for $210-
000 to be used in treatment of drug
addicts Appropriation was made by
the 1923 legislature to run the insti-
tution two years The 1925 legisla-
ture refused to set aside more money
for the operation of the sanitarium
and the buildings were abandoned
Its corridors and spacious rooms
stripped of the last vestige of their
finery give a visitor a creepy feel-
ing as he wanders through the build-
ing of a late evening when long
shadows steal through the spacious
grove of trees that surrounds the in-
stitution A breeze slams swinging doors and
the noise adds no cheerfulness to the
visit
Buildings that constitute the Dar-
lington sanitarium are in a locality
that has been a historical center in
Oklahoma since early territorial
days
The name Darlington is closely in-
terwoven with the names of early
pioneers—frontiersmen who consti-
tuted the population at the old In-
dian agency and frontier trading
post
The sanitarium buildings were built
on charity and brotherly love It
was founded by the Masonic order
and used as a home for orphans of
members of the fraternity
In 1923 Darlington became a po-
litical figure when it was sold to the
state so that Oklahoma might estab-
lish a sanitarium for the treatment
of drug addicts
Darlington sanitarium has been va-
cant for slightly more than a year
and during that time the place has
gone to ruin
The hugh park once one of the
beauty spots of the state is now a
tangled mass of grass weeds and rub-
bish Dead limbs from the hugh
trees that make up the grove around
the buildings have fallen to the
ground and have not been removed
Thousands of dollars would be
needed to replace the buildings in
their former condition Stripped of
every artile that could be removed
the bare walls and floors beneath
a layer of filth are far from attrac-
tive Lighting and plumbing fixtures
have been removed from all the build-
ings and taken to other state insti-
tutions In removing these fixtures
those that could not be properly
loosened were torn and twisted from
their fastenings Practically all of
the light wiring has been stripped
from the walls
Fine doors that once graced the
entrance to the orphanage and later
day sanitarium have been marred and
split by huge nails driven there to
prevent vandals from further wreck-
ing the building
There are more than forty resi-
dence and outbuildings surrounding
the sanitarium formerly used by em-
ployes at the instittition Some of
these now are used by persons who
rent from those who have leased the
property from the state
The 1923 legislature authorized the
purchase of the Darlington home by
the state for $210000 Sufficient
money was appropriated at that time
for the operation of the institution
for two years The 1925 legislature
refused to make additional appropria-
tions for its maintenance and the
projectwas abandoned
Included in the state's purchase
were the two large buildings one
stucco and the other brick a church
a school building dairy barns and
homes for employes and 120 acres
of land Every modern improvement
was had at the sanitarium including
electric lights and a sewer system and
running water
