Bowl Battles Brew Possible Playoff Potential
Well sports fans the bowl bids are in and the battles are brew-
ing present possible playoff potential, thus once again raising
the question over a fight to the finish, to find a true national
champion, something that may still be in doubt even after New
Year’s day action.
If playoff possibilities ever existed, this is it, and for once, give
or take a few question marks, a real titleholder could be found in
the major bowls around the country.
Let’s take a look at the situation as it now exists : in regard to
the bowls and the national rankings of each team.
COTTON BOWL- Nebraska (8) faces Arkansas (7).
SUGAR BOWL- Alabama (1) battles Texas (6) provided
Texas doesn’t lose to Texas A&M this week, then it would be
Houston (9) or Alabama doesn’t stub its toe on Auburn, then it
would be Georgia, not rated.
ROSE BOWLSouthern Cal (2) plays Ohio State (3).
ORANGE BOWL- Oklahoma (4) takes on Florida State (5).
All of this means that the top eight teams face each other, if all
falls into place, but when it is all over, you can bet there will be
several teams, coaches and fans all laying claim to the number
one position in the country.
You can play your own “if" game and there are many
possibilities for any of the top eight teams to lay claim to the
number one spot, all depending on the outcome of the games.
On the other hand, if a playoff should be held on the following
two Saturdays, with funds going to charities, the NCAA and the
schools and conferences involved, then we would truly know who
is number one.
For example, after the bowls we might find the winners to be
Arkansas, Alabama, Southern Cal and Oklahoma, with a draw-
ing to be held to see who plays where, with one game in the
Silverdome or Kingdome, while the other is held at the
Astrodome or Superdome.
Then let’s say Oklahoma beats Arkansas and Southern Cal
beats Alabama, and there you have it sports fans, the matchup
of the century in the Astrodome, Superdome or wherever, and
what a game that would be as Billy Sims goes head to head
against Charles White to see who really is the best in the nation
and who really deserves the Heisman Trophy.
Of course it may not happen this year, but in future years, as
major college costs go higher and higher, especially to finance
athletic programs, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a playoff
system.
When that day comes there will be no more arguments as to
who is number one since it will be decided on the field of play
and not in the minds of sports writers or a select few coaches
who might favor their teams, conferences or sections of the
country.
Curtain Comes Down On Grid Season
The curtain comes down on the regular season this week and
then begins the second season, as bowl time arrives, but in the
meantime, it was an 8-2 record last week, for a season total of
83-35-2 and .690 average and here’s hoping for a good final week
as we pick:
NAVY sinks Army as the Middies close out a successful
season which should make the Kenneth Fanchers happy since
son Kenny, former Bulldog, is a member of the crew.
ALABAMA beats Auburn thus ending the speculation over
the Sugar Bowl match pitting the Crimson Tide against the
Texas Longhorns, if UT beats Texas A&M, otherwise its
Houston.
BOSTON COLLEGE over Holy Cross in the 75th renewal of
this rivalry, which appears to be a tossup and it comes up BC.
MIAMI tops Florida as the Hurricanes put the Gators deeper
in debt but as they say, wait until next year and Coach Charlie
Pell will bring them back.
ARIZONA STATE bops Hawaii which should salve the
wounds of a disappointing season, in which a coach was fired,
games were forfeited, and its Aloha until next year.
HOUSTON pommels Rice thus putting the Cougars in either
the Sun or Sugar Bowl depending on what happens up at Kyle
Field in the Texas A&M-Texas clash.
PITTSBURGH drops Penn State and our apologies for putting
this on last week’s schedule, but so did The Tulsa World and Dai-
ly Oklahoman, which isn’t bad company folks.
TEXAS bombs Texas A&M thus plummeting the Longhorns
into a showdown with Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on New Year s
Day.
TENNESSEE tops Vanderbilt as the Volunteers head for the
Bluebonnet Bowl and a date with the Purdue Boilermakers.
GRAMBLING downs Southern U. in the-battle ol: New
Orleans which usually brings great action in this renews
long rivalry.
