Farm Officials Can't See Russia Soon Going
Ahead in Meat Dairying as Macy Predicts
Ey EICTIARD P POWERS
WASHINGTON LP-"--The Agricul-
ture Department cr today termed
unrealistic a Soviet claim that
within a few years' Russia will
equal or outstrip American per
capita production 'of meat and
dairy products -
An article in a department pub-
lication Foreign 'Agriculture did
not say flatly the claim by Soviet
Communist party boss JChrush-
they would not be achieved But
It detailed reasons why this re-
sult is considered unlikely
Rosa Feed Supply Short
In a May 22 speech in Lenin-
grad Khrushchey said per capita
milk productionL- in the United
States last year was 756 pounds
compared with 540 in Russia that
American butter production was
84 pounds compated with 62
there and that meat production
in this country was 225 pounds
compared with Ti in Russia
The department publication said
a number of handicaps work
against-a rapid increase of Soviet
livestock production
Perhaps the most important of
these it said is the feed supply
in Russia It said this has been ar
perennial weak spot in the Soviet
livestock industry
