fense Under the
Rev John C Page present world con-
ditions measures of defense are on
doubtediy nqessary With the strain
of complications continually arising in
international affairs the strength of
preparedness to withstand unjuki and
unwarranted attack is imperative
In the spiritual realm too there is
need of preparedness need of streqgth
to stand the strain of adverse circum-
stances and the emertencies of life as
they arise It is to this that the words
of the text direct us "Be strong In
the Lord and in the power of His
might Put on the whole armor of
God" for in so doing strength is
found to stand the strain
First there Is the strength of posi-
Hon That brief phrase "in the Lord"
discloses and describes the position of
a Christian believer It is a unique
position There is nothing else like
It in heaven or earth It is never applied
to angels but scores of times in tin New
Testament it Is applied to believers in
the Lord Jesus Christ It is this that
distinguishes Christians from the un-
regenerated and unsaved around them
They are a new creation Old things
have passed away and all things have
become new They are separated unto 1
Christ and called unto His present
grace and future glory The world
does not recognize this but God does
It is His Grace that gives this position
before Him:
Grace fathomless as the sea
Grace flowing from Calvary
In this position with all that it in-
volves there is strength to stand the
strain the pressure of the daily round
and the common task strength to run
with patience the race set before us
'looking unto Jesus" Christian be-
lievers who are instructed in the Word
of truth make very much or this posi-
tion in Christ Like others they are
at present subject to physical neces-
sities human limitations bodily ail-
ments and ultimate death Unlike
others they have security sonship
serenity and strength in their unique
position in Christ Jesus This position
Is not entered into by all who call
themselves Christians but it is the
right the privilege and the glory of
all who have been "born from above"
and have been made "partakers of the
divine nature"
In the second place there is the
strength of protection Our strength
is in "the power of His might" or as
another version puts it "the grasp lir
His mightiness" There Is a measure
of help and strength in a child's grasp
of a father's band but much more
strength in the father's grasp of the
child's hand What strength then must
there be in the grasp of Ills might!
!less! The powers of darkness cannot
pluck us out of His hand "Neither
death nor life nor angels nor Kin
riptides nor powers nor things pres-
ent nor things to come nor height
nor depth nor any other creature shall
be able to separate as from the love or
God which is in Christ Jesus our
Lord" When Peter began to sink In
the waters he had only to say "Lord
help me" and immediately the grasp
of our Lord's mighty hand proved sufficient-
for him There is a popolar

Nomad Weavers
The Inhabitants of eastern Aria are
generally speaking a very ignorant
class education being almost un-
known From the top of a hill one
may look down on a wide valley some
20 miles in width and observe a doz-

'goats' hair which are the homes of
nomad weavers These people whose
livelihood depends almost entirely on
their ilocke are forced and have been
forced for untold generatlons to move
about from place to place in search

one would expect this mode of living

'Childish Fear Not to
Be Roughly Treated
Fears are very crippling indeed
With wiser training our children
might readily escape the epecitic fears
and the general anxieties timidities
and self-doubts which so woefully
hamper them But you cam never
rout fear with brutal radical or "lie
measures it is cruel to force
a child as is often done to endure
alone Just what it most fears Yon
are not making him brave—no not
even if he conceals his feare to please
you The fear pressed below the sur-
face lives on and festers there
Ridicule or honest amusement are
likewise useless Fear no matter
how foolish it sounds to the untear-
lag is too real a thing to be laughed
off It calls always for gentleneee
sympathy a serious effort to under-
stand the cause patient reassurance
and in many cases ekillful re-education
in which pleasant associations or
better understanding on the child's
part drive out the fear—Edna Brand

Grasshopper Vane Not
Original With Faneall
It Is generally conceded that when
Peter Fanelli' caused a large grass-
hopper to be placed on top of Pam!!
ball In Boston as a weathervane be
did It in emulation of Thomas Gres-
ham who 170 years before had given
hls home 'city London a handsome
bourse for merchants dedicated by
Queen Elizabeth as the Royal Ex-
change and crowned by the Gresham
family crest a glided grasshopper The
grasshopper had been adopted for a
crest by the Greshams obviously be-
cause the name Gresham is regarded
as a Corruption of the German word
for grasshopper "grasshelm" Faneall
undoubtedly had seen the London
grasshopper and liked It so he chose
It for the building he gave to Boston
The Faneull hall grasshopper has
fallen to the street three times in its
185 years' existence once In the famous
1755 earthquake again In 1701 when
the building was burned and finally in
1889 as a result of getting entangled
with the flagpole halliards After the
1755 tumble a demolished leg had to
be replaced and in 1889 new glass
eyes as well as horns and feet were
required--Detrolt News

Varieties of Canaries
Canaries were known In a domes-
ticated state at the close of the Four-
teenth century though they way not
have been common as Gesner who
wrote In 1555 said that be had nev-
er seen one Variation among them
began early as partly yellow birds
were known at Nuremberg In 1814
and In 1677 wholly yellow canaries
(also a white variety) were recorded
from Augsburg' In Germany an early
center for the fancy The various
forma have bad their origin In dis-
tinct geographic areas and though
some are almost extinct at present
all at one time or another have bad
a devoted following of fanciers At
present at least 14 distinct strains
with a large number of varieties are
known
Nature's Eccentricities
Visitors to the Lake district of Ent
land are familiar with the disappear
lag island of Derwentwater but few
know that it possesses a mountain
that rocks The Napes Needle on Great
Gable Is loose and may at any time
came crashing sown the mountainside
Wasdale and Wastwater are at the
foot of the Great Gable which is reek-
oned the most perfect mountain form
in Britain Wasdale head a great cen-
ter in the season for crag-climbers and
hill-walkers has three well-known
boasts—that it possesses the highest
mountain the deepest lake and the
smallest church in England The roof
of the church is said to be partly
formed of the hull of a Norm galley
