“llrcalh of Doom"
Hello everybody:
John A Kollins of Decatur 111 t refrigerator re-
pairman and he knows the ins and outs of mechanical re-
fnErKtmg yr5 rrd can tell you just what makes them
Ro
John learned thut business with an eye to making his
bread and butter out of it But there came a time when
he had to use every doggone bit of the knowledge he had
acquired— to save his life
But in the end it was a penknife that saved the day
Without It all of John's technical skill would have been
of little use in the battle against the icy breath of doom
which he and his helper found themselves fighting John's
knowledge told him what not to do but knowing what not
to do isn't enough when death is clamping down and slowly
wringing the life out of you
It all happened in Springfield 111 On March 31 1936
John Kollins was called over there to make some repairs
in the n fi igerating plant of the Morris Fish Market He got
tlirre early in (he morning with hit helper and they worked hard all
day on the job
The market hnd several cooler rooms carrying below freezing tern
tHraUirei and one room called a sharp flsh freezer that went down
tu IU or IS di grees below zero when the machinery was working
Evening was coming on and atlll their job wasn't finished
The market had cloard and every eoe bad gone beme before John
finally got the machinery working properly He atiU had to Met
It though and ho turned tho control on fall and bo and bia
helper climbed out of the basement and went up through the big
empty market to the aharp freeaer room to aee bow rapidly the
machine waa bringing tho temperatnra down
Find Cull It Broken on Freeser Door
When they got to the freerer door John noticed again that the
cuUh vljb broken There was an old pair of ice tongs hanging
nearby to open it in cue It stuck He had seen that before and
Then suddenly the big blade of the knife broke!
made a mental note of it He had even told his helper to be careful
In closing that door behind him But now as John walked In his
helper following behind him gave the door a thoughtless bang
Locked In! And In a email cramped room whooo temper
attire waa rapidly going down! Going to IS below aero!
Not even an Eskimo could live through a night la tho open
nt sutb n temperature and John and hia helper dressed In
erdhtary working clothes knew that they’d bo froten to death
long before morning
"My heart almost failed me right then and there" Buys John “but
If It hadn't been for my knowledge of the itructura of this freezer w
might have died before we even had half a chance to try to get out 1
My helper was all for taking a big block of Ice and trying to ram
the door down but I knew better than to try it The door waa too
strong and If we failed to get out on tha first try It would be the end
“I had built this plant eight yearn befere 1 knew the am
moot a colls would not stand muck larrtng without springing a
leak And enca the ammonin got la we’d have choked te
death before we had a chance to frees"
No— that was out The only thing those two lads could do was cling
to straws They MIGHT Just possibly be alive In the morning
Only Tool Is Two-Bladed Penknife
John asked his helpvr If he had any tools tn his pocket The only
thing the helper had was a small penkmfa with two blades
John told him thev'd have to try digging their way out with that
knife
Anything to keep their minds off tha death that waa clutching
at them— on degree at a Umt They started hacktng away at tha plaster
that costed the walls cutting a hole about eight inches In diameter It
didn't take long to cut through the plaster It was only half an inch
thick But back of that was eight Inches of cork
'He look turn digging" any John ’’and made progress
tmle by tittle Hut all ibis time tha machine wme running In
the basenienl and the temperature was going dowm It went from
re— to ten—to fifteen below aivd our bands became numb a
we worked Then suddenly the big blade ef the knife broke
John Feels He Is Nearing End
"I sat down and wrota a few words to my wife on the back of one
of my cards ! was feeling mighty sleepy and I knew I was nearing
the end And then out of a clear sky my helper shook me and laid
he had a small hole through to the outside"
It waa Just s Uoy bole The one they originally started had
narrowed dowm almost to a point It did them mighty little
good bat John's helper thought they might try shouting for help
Te please bla helper John agreed te try— but he knew there wae
me one la the building and knew that the chances ef any
one bearing them from the outside waa mighty slim
For an hour they kept up their Intermittent shouting John was
yelling "Police" and his helper waa Just crying “Help!" It was almost
10 o’clock by that ttma and John had loot all hope And then suddenly
they got an answer
“Where are you?" A man parking his car la tha alley beslda the
market had beard them
Tha fellow brokt In a window found tha freeser and used the old lee
tongs to pry open the door
"He didn't know whet to do about ms" mys John “uutll K
tm my delirium began yelling ’Pallee!' again He thought that
was good Idea aad called the eepa"
The police arrived and gave the two men stimulants Before It was
ovar tha newspaper photographers had arrived and they bad to go
back Into that freeser again to pose for pictures But that time they
made darned gertpln that the door veuMn't slam shut eu them

Tfine Irish Ion
You know the Irish like green especial-
ly bright green — and as we are Irish it
was just the natural thing for us to do in
making the selection of our wrapping pa-
per to choose a good old Irish green
We tried a dozen paper houses trying
to find just the right green for the Irish
color and finally found it in a St Louis
Mom paper house so in the future all of
our packages will be wrapped in that
good old Irish green so when you see
a package wrapped in Irish green you
don’t even have to ask them where they
trade — but just say to yourself “there
goes a package from Mayo’s”
And here is something else those car-
rying the Irish green packages get — be-
sides Quality Merchandise and Low Pri-
ces — BLACK CAT TRADE MONEY that
is good for valuable gifts Ask your neigh-
