Poll Work Should
Encourage Voters
Probably at no other time in the last decade has a group
such as the Young Democrat Club been so active in Hughes
County to encourage voters to cast ballots in an election and
to test the sentiment of a large number of voters in a "straw"
poll
However because the results were not available until
today's edition of the Daily News — through no fault of
the Young Democrats — the newspaper has decided against
publishing the results at this time
Everyone should realize the magnitude of an attempb
to sampie the opinion of hundreds of voters and the poll
could not be completed in time for an earlier edition
It has been the policy of the Daily News in the past to
avoid late publication of any new information capable of
affecting the outcome of an election
Because the straw poll carries such a potential and might
possibly prejudice some voters in Tuesday's election and since
today's Daily News will be the last before the election we
have decided against circulating the results at this late date
This decision positively was made before the tabulation
of the poll was completed At press time Daily News mem-
bers did not have this information and it is exclusively in the
hands of leaders of the Young Democrats
The Young Democrat Club is indeed an asset to Hughes
County and is to be highly commended for the public-
spirited action which may result in one of the most effective
"Get-Out-the-Vote" campaigns ever conducted in the county
It is our sincere regret that the results of their efforts
in conducting the straw poll could not have been made avail-
able for earlier publication — especially since the Daily
News helped to encourage the Young Democrats in their ef-
forts We can all best serve our county state and nation by
voicing our opinion at the polls Tuesday

outset of the news conference He
insisted it "speaks for itself"
But he showed customary peper-and-vinegar

one asked if there was any one
thing that led him to withdraw as
a delegate
"Yes" Truman snapped "I
don't like a fixed convention"
His statements spread jubilation
among Republicans but brought
some sober-toned comments from
Democrats
Johnson running second to Ken-

strength said he appreciated Tru-
man's "generous words" about his
own qualifications and agreed that
any effort to rig the convention
would cause "bitter resentment"
Roger Tubby Once Truman's
White House press secretary and
now a Kennedy aide in Los An-

would have no effect on Ken-
nedy's chances John Bailey Con-
necticut state Democratic chair-

called Truman's statement "the

Truman himself declined to char-

asked if he would deny this Tru-

WETUMKA — The $89600 bond issue for improvements
in the Wetumka school system defeated by a narrow margir
last month will be re-submitted to school district voters in
two different issues
The Wetumka Board of Education in a meeting Friday
evening decided one issue will be for $45000 and the other
$44000
The $45000 bond if approved would finance enlarging
and remodeling of the hign school gymnasium with addea
seating facilities and other improvements
The $44000 bond issue would finance a new manual
arts-vocational agriculture building heating and lighting im-
provements for Central grade school and a band room
A fire in May destroyed the old shop building and dam-
aged the vocational agriculture building
Details on the two bond issues are yet to be worked out
according to school officials A tentative voting date of
July 19 has been set
Under the new plan voters would have the right to
accept or reject one Gr both school improvement proposals
In the June 14 election at Wetumka a single bond issue
of $89000 was considered for school improvements
At that election the vote was 261 for and 256 against
The results fell short of the 60 per cent approval required
to pass a school bond election After the election the school
board took the issue under advisement

Republican Asks
Governor to Use

OKLAHOMA CITY (UPI)--Paul

of the state election board said
Saturday he had asked federal au-

activities in three eastern Oklaho-
ma counties Tuesday
Darrough in a blistering state-
ment directed at state Sen Ray
Fine of Gore and the two Demo-

pointees to the Cherokee county
election board had refused to let
him have access to election rec-
ords He called for their dismis-
sal but the other two state board
members refused to fire them
State Crime Bureau agents gave
the board evidence of alleged vote-
buying in Fine's district
"In view of the senator's tac-
tics and in the state board's con-
nirrence with Sen Fine" Dar-

"I am furthOt asking that the

Edmondson's press secretary
John Criswell said the governor
vould hold a news conference at

D Key state election board chair-

both Democrats charging "they
took no action to correct the sit-

"told the county election boards
in effect they could do anything
and not be removed unless they
are caught red-handed"

"sufficient reason" to call out the
