- The true friend is he who is more
ready to visit us in adversity than in
prosperity False friends forsake
when the tide isT against us
No man lives to himself In in-
numerable ways one comes into con-
tact with others and influences them
for good or bad Duty and right
feeling demand that we so live that
the influence shed shall be a blessing
aftd not a curse
A man who has an empty cup may
rightly wish to have it filled but the
man with a full cup will do well to
hold it firmly In other words a
man may rightly wish to become
wealthy but the man who has wealth
needs to use it wisely and to learn
the meaning of “enough”
The recent gambling in wheat by
which one man through cornering
the commodity made a good sized
fortune is additional evidence that
laws should be enacted to effectually
make such transactions impossible
The rapid rise in wheat prices was
of io benefit to the farmer while it
wa a positive injury to the consum-
er who has had to pay more for flour
and bread
A man was recently sentenced to
prison for stealing a postage stamp
He was a most foolish man and he
should have known better If he
had stolen a railroad or public lands
or something else on an equally large
scale he would be banquetted right
and left and held in highest honor
by wall street But to steal a post-
age stamp! Could human depravity
go any lower?
The cause of church union which
has for its object the amalgamation
of denominations into one or two
strong united bodies has received a
setback through the decision of the
Tennessee court relative to the dis-
posal of the property of the Cum-
berland Presbyterian Church which
a few years ago was merged into
the Presbyterian church It is to
be noted that the decision is the re-
verse of that given in other states
where the same or similar question
has arisen
Prof J B Foster of the Univer-
sity of Chicago has gained a good
deal of notroriety if not fame by his
attacks on the Bible and revealed
religion Now he advances another
step and an extremely radical one at
that by asserting that God does not
exist that what people call God is
but the ideal of the universe How-
ever much people may disagree in
religions they are well nigh a unit
in believing in the existance of an in-
telligent all wise Supreme being and
the statements of Prof Foster will
not change that conviction Some-
times one is inclined to believe that
occasionally men become so intense-
ly learned that they lose their com-
mon sense That is what the Chica-
go professor seems to have done
Thrift and economy are virtues in
which Americans do not excell In
fact we may be considered the most
wasteful and extravagent of peoples
and the reason is found in the easier
conditions of life prevailing here
rendering it unnecessary to practice
the rigid economies of the peoples
of the old world Nevertheless it is
a great pity that a wise economy is
not more generally practiced for in
this land when seasons of business
depressions occur many thousands of
homes are reduced to proverty and
misery because through improvi-
dent living they had made no provi-
sions for such contingencies In the
matter of economy we may learn
much from other nations In Lon-
don for instance saving banks are
organized in connection with the
public schools with the purpose of
inculcating habits of thrift among
the children Last year those chil-
dren deposited 182000 dollars which
shows that the lesson was being
wisely learned
