Win A Salter Editor
One effective way of getting rid
of one’s own troubles is to help oth-
ers who are afflicted
In our work no endowments how-
ever great and many can be a sub-
stitute for honesty and devotion
Without them work is poorly done
and life itself is a failure
The effect of prosperity upon in-
dividuals is not uniform it may
make one person generous and an-
other selfish In the first instance it
is a blessing in the other a curse
We cannot avoid seeing the faults
of others but we can and ought to
avoid all needless observance of
them If we are inclined to be un-
charitable it may serve as a check
to remember that we have faults of
our own
' What a pity it is that some of the
good things said about men after
their death were not said to them or
of them when they were living
What a cheer and inspiration they
would have been to many souls strug-
gling with adverse conditions of life
Influence is both conscious and un-
conscious and oftentimes the uncon-
scious influence is the greater The
word or act unconsciously spoken or
done may be fraught with conse-
quences of which we may never
dream and which we may never ev-
en know
An old writer once said in effect
that freemindedness cheerful dispo-
sition regularity of hours of meals
sleep and exercise best insure long
life and health Notwithstanding
the theories nostrums and fads our
present day has brought forth to
promote health and longevity the
old formula still holds good
The country sincerely mourns the
death of Cevera the Spanish Admi-
ral who led his ships to defeat against
Sampson’s fleet He was a gallant
chivalrous fighter and that his ships
made so poor a showing was more
his misfortune than his fault Poor-
ly trained crews and ships in poor
condition because of official incompe-
tency contributed to his defeat
The constant striking of the clap-
per upon one spot of a bell is said to
affect its tone to such an extent that
in course of time the bell has to be
taken down sent to the factory and
retoned In like manner the con-
stant hammering and rough usage
of the world will affect the life of
any man unless at times he relaxes
and brings counteracting forces into
play
I No American soldiers remain in
Cuba and that country is now free
to work out its own salvation Ev-
ery well wisher of Cuba and of lib-
erty and independence must hope
she may be successful in the attempt
If her success in self-government
and in material prosperity does not
come up to American ideals allow-
ance must be made for the different
temperament of the Latin-American
peoples Certainly it is to be hoped
that no occasion may arise for fur-
ther interference or for annexation
for this country has race problems
enough and to gpare of its own
We are in receipt of Volume 1
Number 1 of the Ripley Mail which
is published by R G Bentley It is
a neat five column quarto sheet and
shows painstaking care in both edi-
torial and mechanical work Over a
years association with the editor has
shown us that he is a perfect gentle-
man in every respect and the people
of Ripley are certainly lucky in se-
curing him to run a paper for them
It is needless to say that we wish
Ray success in his new location for a
man with his enterprise and ability
cannot help but succeed f
Such men as John Mitchell are the
very best kind of leaders for the
workingmen and that this is realized
by them is seen in the affectionate
regard the miners have for the man
who so wisely led them during the
great strike seven years ago and
who so constantly gives them good
counsel As an instance take one of
his latest utterrances in which he
truly said that “if the shorter day
has given the miners more time for
drink and depravity it is a curse but
if it has given them more time for
their families and for books it is a
godsend’’ Such words coming from
him have great weight with the men
and it is cheering to know that to
the great mass of them the shorter
day is a benefit
The government has done right in
refusing the request of the Russian
government that Pouren the revo-
lutionary refugee be extradited and
he is now set free after being in pris-
on for nearly eighteen months
Many of the methods employed by
the revolutionary party in Russia in
their desperate efforts to secure lib-
erty may be repungant to our Amer-
ican ideas but then conditions in
Russia are such as could never exist
in this country and that makes a dif-
ference The Russian government
though by courtesy called civilized
is nothing but a semi-barbarous or-
ganization ruling by legal murder
repression and ignorance Therefore
any request it makes for the extra-
dition of men whom it has goaded
into rebellion by its cruelty is not
likely to be honored by America In-
cidentally and yet very suggestively
the refusal by our government to
deport Pouren is a sharp rebuke to
the Russian Government
That the “parliament of man” and
universal peace and brotherhood be-
tween nations is yet in the far dis-
tance must be obvious to all A man
who invents a quick firing gun a
new explosive a torpedo or some
other man killing device can get the
ear of any government far more
readily than the man who has a life
saving invention J ust now the craze
is for big battleships of the Dread-
nought type England sets the pace
and other nations follow and very
recently Great Britain was thrown
into a panic and voted many addi
tional millions of dollars because it
was learned that Germany was build-
ing a number of Dreadnoughts and
planning to build more Such a ves-
sel costs millions of dollars and it
becomes obsolete in three or four
years Thinking men are asking
how it is going to end and finance
ministers and secretaries of the
treasury are at their wits end in Eu-

rope to raise the money with which
to build The burden rests upon the
people whose taxes have been enor-
mously increased in recent years and
it is plain before very long some of
the nations will face bankruptcy and
then perhaps sheer financial exhaus-
tion may compel them to halt in the
mad race That universal peace will
come we do not doubt the only un-
certain thing is the method by which
it will come Will it be by the ac-
ceptance of right principles or by
the adoption of arms guns etc of
so destructive a character that war
will become impossible or by the
bankruptcy of nations? Perhaps a
decade or two more will decide
